Anyone else in the Bathurst/Lakeshore area? We just moved there from Yonge and Eglinton. The reception is terrible! At Y and E, we had a clear south-southwest view, and I could receive all Buffalo and Toronto channels in solid HDTV. We are on a high floor at the new place, with a more southwesterly view (but still a clear shot across the lake). However, we can only receive CFTO, and if lucky, Fox 29. The CN Tower is 'behind' us, so I think it's a combination of a directional issue from the tower, and the amount of concrete between. However, not sure why I can't get any Buffalo. Oh, I can receive the Toronto stations, but only in analog (CFTO is the exception). If I can receive the analog broadcast, why not the digital? Anyone else in the same boat?

You're almost certainly overloading the receiver with the strong signals from the CN Tower. A 20dB attenuator at the rx input may help.

Yeah, there's a WBNF-CA channel 15 on Grand Island, owned
by Faith Broadcasting. It's either 9.2kW south-east directional
or 27kW directional if they've acted upon their construction
permit yet.

SunTV in Hamilton is about 45 miles away and only 4.1kW,
so I guess this is allowed.

I found the Rogers CJMT channel 44 digital application on the CRTC site.
The last pages of one of the PDFs show a coverage map with interfering signals. Channel 45 Hamilton's pattern is shown. It goes towards the southwest. Maybe 15 is the same. I can't see either one in Toronto.

This one is for CFMT 64 also with coverage maps.

More license applications with coverage maps from the CRTC website.

That null for city-dt is towards the "i" channel transmitter, half way between Buffalo and Rochester .Buffalo is in signal coverage direction. It's a very sharp null for proposed WPXJ-dt on 53 but they could not get approval. They have applied for 23 after USA analog shut down.

hey guys

great thread!

had a couple questions...

I just got my HDPVR from Rogers and I plugged it in to my LG plasma via HDMI. HD channels look great but my problem is with the analog channels. they look HORRIBLE! It looks very pixelated

Also, when I flip through channels or go to the guide, the screen goes blank for a while and then after about 5 6 secs it comes back. Is this a receiver or a tv problem? I cant really tell. I have a regular cable box (not HD nor PVR) connected to another TV and i dont experience that problem

thanks in advance!

Analog...pixelated...doesn't sound likely? Possibly SD digitals?

Sounds like poor signal strength on your cable.
LET'S GO BUFFALO!!!

hey,

actually i fixed the pixel problem! the cable box was set to manual configuration and not auto HDMI

once I fixed that all the channels have generally improved

and I figured out that the TV was the reason the screen goes blank. Apparently, if I change a channel which has an output resolution of 1080i to a channel that is 480p, the TV has to adjust itself

I just didn't know it took that long

Kind of a let down - does anyone have a fix to this?!? do you think I should use component cables rather that HDMI or will not change anything?

thanks

Yeah, most TVs take a while to "figure out" the new resolution. When channel surfing between 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i it can become a real pain. I just lock my 8300HD into 1080i mode (you need to run the HDTV setup wizard to tell the box what resolutions you want to support - say "no" to everything but 1080i).

Yesterday I was watching Global News and they referred to thier first HD broadcast that day. Did anybody see this? Was it over air or on cable?

re: WNGS-SD 7.2, it's the same for me, markrpopp. I definitely have signal, and get program name and rating information displayed, but no picture or sound, as at the time of this post.

Do you have a link or documentation to that? It may help those of us in Niagara understand why getting CITY is hit and miss.

Global has been doing cable for quite a while... maybe they mean first in-studio HDTV broadcast, such as the news? At any rate I'll do a scan tonight (I did one on the 28th with no new stuff).

jbracing, that whole thing doesn't make any sense to me, because there are two people that i know of in the lockport area that CAN receieve city-dt. meanwhile we got and dspredator with nothing between the CN Tower and his CM4228 but a nice lake breeze, and nothing.

either way, City-dt needs to increase power
