I'm looking for a remote that has the following characteristics:

- competent learning function ... needs to control my Denon integrated amp and Onkyo CD player; the Denon probably does not show up in standard code libraries

- simple ... this is for controlling the stereo from locations throughout the house (once I get a RF repeater set up for it), so all I really want is power, volume, play/stop/pause/track skip controls, and maybe track/disk number controls. Very minimalistic is preferred in this case.

- durable ... will be moved around the house and taken outside, so should be reasonably well built.

- inexpensive ... I've got a HTM MX-500 for my theater room, and that is much more than I'm looking for in this particular remote. I don't want fancy touch screens, backlighting, macros, 10+ devices, etc., just the main buttons mentioned previously.

I could see something along the lines of a MX-200 sidekick remote, if that helps to picture what I'm envisioning.

Thanks,
Dan

The MX-200 is a great and powerful remote. If that is what you want, I cannot think of anything better. The other alternative is to go with one of the cheaper one for all remotes that is JP1 compatible. I will let Robman edmund and James help you with that

Is the MX-200 sold individually now? It looks that way from the web site.

Can it only be programmed through the software, and is that included? I would need to make sure I can get the commands from my original remotes to the MX-200...

I could probably use the A and B macro buttons as prev/next disc controls, plus the channel up/down as track controls, so it could work reasonably well despite being a tad sparse. The volume control is the main thing I want, though, so assuming I can actually get the codes onto it and can find it at something less than the $80 listed price, it could be a good option.

Like Anthony said, a cheap JP1 compatible remote is probably your best option. JP1 remotes are usually sold under the Radio Shack and One For All brand names.

The JP1 approach seems a bit overly complex for this (doesn't quite fit the "simple" goal), but if I find a JP1 compatible remote that I like, it's probably worth considering.

Following the instructions on:

[Link: hifi-remote.com]

"The first program you'll need is IR203.zip (or latest), which you can download from the Files>Programs folder at the JP1 site."

When I look here:

[Link: groups.yahoo.com]

I don't see anything of the sort. Does it go by a different name now? I figured I could look up which remotes are compatible within the RDF folder...

Is it a combination of the packages listed there?

Ah, I think I see it. It's been moved to the Tools page:

the 200 is sold separately You can get it from HTM. But I don't know what comes with it. You cannot teach the codes to a 200. But (and this is big) it is PC programmable, it uses the same files as the 700 and 800, and the editor can import codes from Pronto CCFs. So in other words there is a big chance that the codes are somewhere on this site and usable

I'm thinking about giving the Sony RM-VL1000 a try. Slightly mixed bag of reviews, but it should be more than good enough for this purpose and can be had pretty cheap right now on eBay. $80 for a MX-200 seems like major overkill, as does fiddling with JP1 stuff.

The "JP1 For Beginners" page on my site is out of date, there is a more up to date version of it in the JP1 Yahoo group (in Word format).

JP1 can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be. If your only goal is to make sure that there's a code for each of your devices, it's incedibly easy, but if you want your remote to do every little thing you could possibly imagine (and yes, this is usually possible) it gets more complicated.
