Unrelated, I hope I'm not the only one who can't watch CHCH-DT; I think their PSIP isn't perfected, yet. I'm in Kitchener, and receive SunTV and CTS from the same Stoney Creek tower, rock solid, and have comparable signal level from CHCH-DT, but my ATSC receiver doesn't register any channel for 18-1. It says it adds the channel, but nothing is listed, no matter how many times I retry adding it, and/or resetting the box. As I said I still can't get CHCH-DT here in Welland,in the AVS forum my usergroup did say that my tuner is long-in-the-tooth but the card can't be beat in playing back and organizing tp/ts files, so maybe I'll get the Fusion and see how it goes. I've done scans, added the D18 manually in MyHD and all I get is the empty strength bar and a flashing Dolby 5.1 indication. I don't even get that for Glow-ball. I blame the pitiful low power outputs that the CDN stations are getting away with. We need to rally and force them(all) to up it to a minimum 100Kw!!!!

That's surprising that you can't get CH in Welland. You are much closer to Hamilton than I am. Here in Fort Erie I can at least get a signal but usually too low to lock. Feel fortunate that you can get CBC, I have no luck with that one at all.

I did get 18.1 the other night here in Albion, NY, but it is dependent on weird atmospheric conditions, as is 35-2. 41-1 continues to come in pretty consistently, with signal comparable to 57-1 and 66-1. CFTO suffers from sharing space with an analog signal from a lowpower Rochester 40, 30 miles east of me. When the antenna was down, I could still lock on to CBC 20 with it 5 just ft. off the ground.

I've done scans, added the D18 manually in MyHD and all I get is the empty strength bar and a flashing Dolby 5.1 indication. Yeah, I blame PSIP. According to the " Nazis" (heh!) over at DHC, Canwest Global's engineers at their national broadcast centre in Calgary claim PSIP information is locally inserted at each transmitter site, so I'm tempted to email a contact I have at CHCH to complain. People who say "ohh, your tuner is too old" and stuff are wrong; ATSC is a standard and more recent generations of the core chipset do nothing different except better tune more noisy (i.e. ghost-ridden) signals. It's not as if every set-top box, TV, computer tuner, etc. is going to require a firmware upgrade every 2 years. Since others say CHCH-DT has changed PSIP to 11.1, today, and I think if people like us don't speak up about problems it has with certain tuners, we'll never be watching their DTV signal. I blame the pitiful low power outputs that the CDN stations are getting away with. We need to rally and force them(all) to up it to a minimum 100Kw!!!! Indeed... it's pathetic, really.

We still love our MyHD/MDP-130s, our American cousins are lucky in that their stations consider 100kw to be low power, as I suspected 20Kw seems to be the threshold that MyHD can lock on to. If I win my current bids at ebay.ca the plan is to build a low-cost HTPC with either the Fusion Gold or the Fusion 5 or the new model made for PCIe slots and pull a 130 out of one of my two comps here. Why that combination? There is a freeware electronic program guide that functions with both cards. So I'm gambling that the Fusion series has a tuner that is better at pulling in the weak signals. Aside from news, what does CH have that we can't get from Buffalo? Nothing! So screw them! Screw the CRTC for not letting us have our station in St. Catharines!

It's not as if every set-top box, TV, computer tuner, etc. is going to require a firmware upgrade every 2 years. Yeah, good points, I'm in no hurry to spend money, if I lose at any of my current bids, It'll give me pause to rethink building another HTPC. My Proview monitor/TV blew on Monday night(no big deal, I watched "Bones" and "House" on the P3 with its' old :Hansol). What got my goat was when I contacted a CSR in Garden Grove in California, she said the nearest auth repair centre was in Vaughn(that's a 5 hour drive for me). Plus while I suspect that it was a power supply failure, she said an out of warranty repair was a flat rate of 150$ P&L but a power supply or backlight failure is only at best a 50$ fix. I know how to fix computers but no one taught me how to fix TVs/monitors, I know how they work but open up the back and apart from knowing how to discharge a CRT I'm clueless where to start. So I took that 150 and for one hundred more got a Acer X223WBD at Staples, same price as Tigerdirect and save the shipping! Three years P & L same for Backlight. Should have bought an Acer in '06! Staples is the place for me, at least in Welland because monitors are the one thing I have to see and touch close up, no internet or mail order. Is this going to be the trend with products made in China? Forced upgrade every two years for things that should last ten? [the Proview was purchased at Wal-Mart] My apologies for going off-topic(the above price included taxes) thanks for letting me rant. Excuse me while I go and update my profile.

8:15 am, GLOBAL 41.1 (65.1 also seems to work) broadcasting content (we can only hope they're not just testing). My signal strength is 85%. It's upconverted SD in 4:3. I guess HD stuff will probably be tonight with their American content.
Does anyone know if they are outputting 720p or 1080i?
I am receiving Global on 65.1 on my 2nd TV and on 65.2 on my 1st TV both are broadcasting 1080i

Hey, last night I picked up 18.1 from my 4228 pointed toward Buffalo from my home in east Toronto , Just north of the beaches. Signal fluctuates from 10-40%. Unwatchable.

Man, you guys are doing something wrong if you can't pick up 11 DTV from Toronto. That transmitter is 1,000ft above the escarpment and likely a clear shot to your house.
Buy a TV at Walmart? Not even at gunpoint... I guess if I were in the market for wife beater shirts, track pants or plastic sandals I'd go there.

Not if you live in a bungalow five doors northeast of a 15 storey apartment building. I am barely skimming the southwest edge of the building with my roof mounted 4228. I can normally pickup Buffalo CBS, NBC, FOX, CW, PBS and sometimes ABC. My 4221 points directly east at the front of my house where I skim the north edge of the building. This allows me to pickup CBC, CTV, SUN, CITY, CBC french, and Global. If 18.1 could bump up the signal slightly , I am sure I could get it better. On April 25, 2008 at 09:51, donnyjaguar said...

Yeah, I should have bought an Acer in '06, after all, they were the only ones that made a CRT monitor in the early nineties that was compatible with the Atari ST weird resolutions at 15Khz and 31Khz horizontal freq. Still have it in storage. I'd like to get another Acer X223WBD, then either put the :Hansol away as a backup or using the 130's dongle, in a dual setup with the 130's "use separate monitors" mode enabled. I hate the bad rap that U-top undershirts have gotten lately, they were great when I was a kid and mom made you put on layers in winter. :-)

Update on CHCH in central Mississauga: i'm finally getting it.Not as strong as i would wish, ~75%, but will do.At first it was quite a problem because tunning was quite tricky with it's there-it's not after i move an antenna very slightly.Got somebody to sit down and check percentage while i was messing with antenna. That's what i recommend for everybody with bad reception. I'll see how/if it's stable when the night is gone.Something tells me that it won't stay this way. Overall, reception of CHCH should be possible for whole nearby Toronto area.Though would not count on it with antenna being inside.

Unusual conditions last night. UHF was lifting but VHF was depressed. I watched Dexter on Ch 8 DTV Rochester without interruption betwixt 10-11pm. The analogue Ch 8 only had sound and no raster. Normally I get it very snowy. Syracuse was burping but no raster.
