In the market to buy a Sony DVD Player and am interested in this model. I figured that this would be the best place to find out pros & cons.

Thank you.

Well, the pros are many -- needless to say it's one of the top rated models for the money. A major con was the lip-sync problem, however that has been fixed now. I'd say go for it.

For reference, I have the Sony S500D. There are other good brands out there as well, but the S330 has a number of nice features and provides very good quality.

If you have any plans on going component then I believe you need to step up to the 530 or 550. If you have no plans on using component then this is probably the best DVD playre for the money (~$300) If your tv has component input I suggest the Sony 530. Is you tv 16:9? If so I suggest the SD2109 because it has component and is priced in the same neighborhood as the Sony 330. For a 4:3 tv non-component the Sony 330 is the best way to go.

Thanks for the suggestions! Would the Toshiba SD3109 be my best buy overall in this category? I saw one last night for $298.00 on-line and liked the dual tray feature in addition to the other features.

I now have a Pro-Logic receiver, but plan to upgrade to a Sony STRDE935 with Dolby Digital after Christmas.

I have a friend who says all I sould consider is a Sony DVD, but I wanted a more rounded opinion.

What do you think about the Toshiba SD3109? I've heard SO much about Lip Sync problems with the Sony DVD Players that I'm unsure as to what to do.

Thank you

Well, people looking to find things wrong with the Sony picked on the lip-sync problem. And try to make it seem like ALL Sony players had it. Now that the particular issue has been fixed, they still pick on it. :-)

Yes, Toshiba also make good DVD players. I, however, have not used one for any length of time and thus can't form an educated opinion. I HAVE used several Sony players for well over a year and can heartily recommend them.

I've heard that Toshiba DVD players sometimes suffer from downconversion problems when viewing movies on a 4:3. That's why I would suggest a Sony over a Toshiba if your tv isn't 16:9 (Widescreen). If you are going to be getting a widescreen tv in the near future then the Toshiba 3109 for $300 is the way to go. Otherwise go with Sony, the lip sync problems are gone.
