I have found some threads on this but no solutions.

I'm setting up a new Pronto system for the first time. I downloaded the latest PEP 2.4.x from Philips area. Install goes fine.

Vista - plug in control panel and I get unrecognized USB device and of course PEP will not connect with HID error. I have tried everything including the laptop standalone running on battery but no go.

Windows 7 - after an hour plus with Vista, in desperation, I plugged into my Win 7 laptop and the USB install begins fine. But, I had not preinstalled PEP so the installation would not complete. Now with PEP installed on Win 7 the USB installationg will not restart. I have tried finding and deleting the USB device but no luck.

Any help with either OS is appreciated. It's long weekend and I have a lot of work to do.

Level II cert not much good when you can get to first base :(

Thank you

rap,

I have PEP2 running on a Vista 64 Ultimate desktop and a W7 64 Professional laptop. On Vista the only annoyance is the need to authorize PEP2 to run each time.

I have not had any HID problems on my own systems, but I know that others bump into them. Recently I bumped into a laptop that briefly had the HID issue, but it resolved after we waited a minute. Evidently, we tried to communicate with the Pronto too soon after attaching it.

Sometimes I find that the USB connection with Pronto becomes flustered and the only solution is detaching the Pronto and rebooting both the Pronto and the computer. This was more of an issue with my XP laptop. I have had zero issues with the Vista desktop and the W7 machine is about two weeks old.

Usually, one can find and disable the offending HID device. Most of the time the offender is a device that is not actually installed on the system and no one cares if it is disabled. Unfortunately, computer manufacturers tend to load every USB driver that they can dig up -- in an effort to make everything "easy". Sometimes there is interference. It is a pain to work through the list, one by one, but it is usually a one time chore. The awkward part is if the keyboard or mouse driver is the responsible party.

Look in the PEP File drop down for the "Save Project As Pack And Go file ...". In an emergency one can edit the project on one computer, create the Pack And GO, then transfer the file to a system that can download to the Pronto. I'll use this facility to send a customer a quick repair, perhaps a cable channel change.

buzz, thanks very much for the reply.
I've been through the USB drivers and I'll do it again. I do have a Logitech Mouse and I'll track that down first.

What I don't understand is that Vista/Win 7 reports and "unknown device" and aborts the install.

Can you tell me what driver is supporting the Pronto? Is it a standard MS driver or a Philips driver? I can't find a Philips drive anywhere in the PEP package or on the CD.

If I can find the right .inf file I'll just do a manual driver install.

A couple more hours this AM...
Located the Logitech mouse driver and unistalled it. No difference. Again, upon plug-in of the console, Vista reports an "unrecognized device," so it doesn't know it's a Pronto or a printer. Therefore, the driver install routines don't work or complain.

I manually located and installed throught the MS USB wizard a Philips composite USB device which is what the Pronto is and the driver installs but complains because it cannot validate the proper driver if it does not know what the device is.

I really can't believe Philips cannot support the "simple" install of a USB device like thousands of other manufacturers. Plug-n-play is supposed to do just that!

This is a nasty issue that no one wants to own. Everyone points the finger at someone else.

Nasty issue indeed...

Time to give back to the group… [Link: nirsoft.net]

If you are not aware of this free utility – USBDeview.exe – you should be! This utility has helped me a lot with troubleshooting and it’s worth its weight. It’s a simple .EXE file, one for 32-bit and one for 64-bit OSes. Check it out. Alas, still no joy with my Pronto USB connect issue.

A couple of more hours late yesterday… USBDeview reported the exact status of the Pronto Driver Install on the Win7 laptop. Pronto will install four drivers: i) USB Composite Device, ii) USB Mass Storage Device, iii) TSU9400 USB Device, and iv) USB Input Device. They all install successfully except the USB Input Device. Using Deview I removed (uninstalled) just about every USB input device on my system. With each attempt you need to power cycle the Pronto and remove the previously installed Pronto drivers in order to reinitiate the install sequence on plug-in. The Win7 “device assistant” attempts to repair the device by reinstalling the missing driver but it fails also. The Win7 box remains unusable as this last driver will not install. This process was repeated several times including reboots of laptop and Pronto.

Back to Vista… Following generally the same procedure described for the Win7 box produced even less progress as Vista continues to report “unknown USB Device.” Again, if the OS cannot discern what the new device is, it’s just not going to install.

Why is it that the MS device compatibility and driver website does not know what a Pronto is? They only have been around for about ten years!

It may not be your issue but in the past I have had anti-virus software interfere considerably with USB. I recently installed the latest PeP on Windows 7 x64 and it worked first time, not even a reboot required. I use Kaspersky. Some other AV programs may have issues. It's worth turning your AV software off for a bit and redoing the install and seeing if that helps you.

Rap and Colognebroker.

For me, the HID error was resolved by updating to the latest firmware (version 7.3.3) and installing the latest PEP2 (version 2.4.23). Both are available from the Philips Pronto site.

The latest versions available in the RC files section are firmware 7.2.22 and PEP 2.4.18. If these the versions you are using, then try the latest versions, worked for me.

Kean.

I don't use Kaspersky, but it may have a 'scan removable drives' setting. Try disabling this feature.
"Home" is where my Pronto is.

2many...thanks. i have the latest PEP, but it's impossible to download new firmware to the Pronto if you can't make a USB connection.

However, the Pronto was replaced with a new one and first time plug-in to Vista-64 it worked. It didn't have the newest firmware either as I later downloaded it.

Win7-64 worked too but, I had to unstall with USBDeview the old remants of earlier failed installation attempts.

Thanks everyone!

To close this issue, my distributor arranged to replace my TSU9400 w/ a new one from Philips.

Worked first time out of the box on Vista 64 and Win7 64.

I'm not sure what to make of all the HID stuff now...seems like Philips may have a fix in the hardware. After the first connection I downloaded the latest firmware.
