I am in the market for a new remote my TSU6000 is on its last leg. I dig the way the MX looks and really like the ability to program anything into it. In reading through the Owners Manual and programming manual it seems as though this is geared toward a professional pre programming it based on my equipment. I disagree with this all the way as I will be the end user and want it programmed to my exact needs and want the ability to change things later on down the road if wanted.

So here is my question does the programming software come with the remote? Do you have to buy from an authorized dealer to recieve the software? Using amazon.com I have found the following retailers Electronics Expo and Electronica Direct both with very reasonable prices. Are either if these "authorized dealers"?

I noticed on the universalremote.com web site it will ask you to register the remote based on serail number and vendor so yes it must be bought through an authorized dealer? I don't want any of it to be preprogrammed and would really like to mail order it as prices I've seen on the web are far cheaper than at my local tweeter.

I don't really care about the live update feature as I can log on with my PC and upgrade software if something does drastically change.

How can I find a list of authorized mail order dealers?

Thanks in advance and sorry for the long thread.
Jeff.

Yes, you have to purchase from an authorized dealer to get software legally.

It is up to the dealer to give you the software with the updates or the latest version of the sofware that does not. Or any software at all for that matter.

Ask the AD first which software he will give you. Your best bet is one of the AD's on this site that understand that clients can programm their remotes for themselves. You will have to email for special pricing.

Also, URC website has a list of AD's. I doubt you will get much knowledgable customer service from the larger guys about different available versions of the software.

Good Luck!

EDIT: If you buy from an AD you can download the standard version online with your valid SN.

Even if he doesn't buy from an AD, as long as the remote *HAS* a serial number he can download the standard version online ...

Or has that changed?

I just imagine he is taking a chance of the serial number not being on the unit if he buys from a non-AD that doesnt want to be traced.

Yep, it's definately something buyers should check. I've purchased 3 used remotes over the years. 2 of them have serial numbers, 1 didn't ... but at the time I bought them I didn't even know the things had serial numbers under the battery compartment let alone it would become a future issue when URC pulled the plug on live-updating.

I think the moral of the story is that regardless of how you buy the remote (AD, non-AD, used) make sure you'll get the version of the s/w you want before you buy and then cross your fingers.... *grumbles*

so that was a shady phone call. sounded like the guy was "working" out of the back of his van in NYC. Claimed to be an AD but had no idea what the MX-3000 was let alone what software it came with. I guess the search continues.

anyone on the forum an AD?

It doesn't look like they are, and even if they are you still need to make sure they're cognizant of URC's policy changes and will make the live-update version of the s/w available to you ...

All of the 'authorized dealer' stuff notwithstanding, it's a GREAT remote, and is not difficult to program. I found the Editor software to be much easier to learn than I did with the Pronto software.

By the way, I bought mine at a VERY reasonable price (MUCH less than msrp) from an authorized dealer who regularly posts on this forum, so make some calls...

But I digress......

Here is contact info on two of the legal AD E-store sources that have a prominent presence on the forums here. Call them and let them know your a do-it-yourself-er looking for a legal deal. They can't post prices less that USRP on the web.

It may not be appropriate for them to solicit sales via the forums. Dunno the ins and outs. But there is definately more then one AD who post on these forums, who will get you the live-updates s/w, and some of them will even give you a price under MSRP.

I'm not sure when Cedia is over, but many of them were out of town last week for that.

been digging a little deeper into this. Part of the package is the editor software. If purchesed from ebay, as long as the actual CD is in the package which they all apear to come with a software CD than everything would be OK except I would not recieve live updates?

I imagine that it depends on when they recieved their shipment of remotes. We have been hearing from end-users here that they did not recieve software when purchased on ebay. You can look a little deeper for info on specific sellers. Also, I imagine the product descriptions on ebay are unedited since the change over.

I emailed you with my contact info if you want to discuss.
