why does dvd audio players use rca connections instead of the digital coax/opt connection?
i would have thought that rca connections are legacy and they would have used the one cable paradigm? if you want dvd audio you have to buy a new receiver anyway.

Because there is no digital interface agreed on by the studios. Once they have copy issues resolved, they can pick a digital interface (almost assuredly it will be Firewire) and start making receivers and players with this capability. They're always worried about piracy, even though pirates don't care about fidelity. Morons.
The same issue is going on right now with HDTV.

My wife owns some VCD made in Asia that will only play back audio through the analog RCA connections. When I upgraded to a digital receiver I hooked up my DVD with Toslink only, and went crazy for the next few hours trying to figure out why we got no sound from her discs.

what a mess. well i'm glad i am no longer a music enthusiast and now i am dvd enthusiast. the only music i buy is on dvd video.

Yes, DVD audio is an uncompressed from of audio from a DVD. To enjoy it in its full uncompressed state, you would need a DVD audio player and hook it into your receiver via the 5.1 channel discrete inputs (if it has those). Although most DVD Audio discs have a dolby digital track on them also. Although, it's not a 'true' DVD audio format.

Actually, the DVD-A interface and copy-protection system has now been finalized. They did use Firewire, of course. Probably in 6 months we'll start seeing processors and players with this capability. Maybe longer, it depends on how much the equipment mfgrs already knew and have developed.
The only real issue here is that you can't currently use the DAC in your receiver to decode DVD-A or SACD audio. Well, that and most players don't have real bass management.
Both these formats are really in their infancy and nobody has done them justice yet. Only a few decent discs are actually out, and the hardware is most definitely first generation. I'm waiting for a sub-$500 player that does both DVD-A and SACD. I wouldn't be surprised if one exists by the end of this year.
