Because there is no digital interface agreed on by the studios. Once they have copy issues resolved, they can pick a digital interface (almost assuredly it will be Firewire) and start making receivers and players with this capability. They're always worried about piracy, even though pirates don't care about fidelity. Morons.
The same issue is going on right now with HDTV.
