Actually, the DVD-A interface and copy-protection system has now been finalized. They did use Firewire, of course. Probably in 6 months we'll start seeing processors and players with this capability. Maybe longer, it depends on how much the equipment mfgrs already knew and have developed.
The only real issue here is that you can't currently use the DAC in your receiver to decode DVD-A or SACD audio. Well, that and most players don't have real bass management.
Both these formats are really in their infancy and nobody has done them justice yet. Only a few decent discs are actually out, and the hardware is most definitely first generation. I'm waiting for a sub-$500 player that does both DVD-A and SACD. I wouldn't be surprised if one exists by the end of this year.
