my current pioneer 509 has two optical inputs and one coax input.

If you use the coax connection you automatically lose one of the optical inputs.

my question is, how can you hook up two digital inputs from dvd players? it seems that the only input that understands 5.1 is the dvd/ld input. I tried using cd and it didn't work. I haven't tried sat/tv yet because I my satellite is hooked up through there.

as a work around i have been using the coax connection and reassinging the inputs with a macro when i need to switch dvd players.

Hey Slocko,

It sounds like your receiver only has 2 digital inputs, one being optical and two being optical or coaxial. On the receiver what are they labeled? I am assuming one is labeled DVD, but am unclear as to what the other is.
You should be able to pump in a DD/DTS digital signal on any of the digital inputs and it should be understood as DD/DTS. I tried Pioneer's website, but it is very uninformative, and doesn't even give you a back panel picture....Tony

the input switches on the front can be assigned to any of the digital inputs in the back. I tried assigning the cd input switch to use one of the digital inputs and it didn't work. Today I am going to try the sat/tv input switch since that one seems to do dolby digital from my dishplayer. I am going to hook up the sat straight to the tv to free up the port on the receiver.

I am researching receivers now and I am leaning toward a kenwood but can't figure out if they support pro logic ii.

Yep Kenwood VR-507 and VR-509 both have Pro-Logic II (according to Circuit City's website). I would also assume that higher models the VR-510, 5080, 5090, 5700, and 5900 all have it too, but I can't confirm that anywhere....Tony

Just a suggestion: Crutchfield has back panel views on just about everything, some enlargeable. (is that a word?)

i tried it again and it's working. i can get a digital signal through the cd and sat inputs. I guess somehow I was getting confused with the shared input coax/optical port.

i'm ready for a kenwood!
