Ok here is the situation,

I just got a Magnavox 42" plasma tv (not philips) and it seems to be pretty obscure as far as finding any information on it. Actually I have not been able to find any information at all on the web regarding this tv that I bought from HHGREG. I still can not figure out why neither HHGREG nor Magnavox has a website...sheessh...but that is off track.

I want a universal remote for this TV. I have tried a few universal models (rca and philips) ranging from $20 to $50. None of them had the code for my tv.

I am hoping someone on here might give me some input on this tv or a remote for it. I do not really want to spend 100 bones for a universal remote.

OEM remote is BRC-257s
TV model #: 42MF000/17

If I can provide any more info I will do so.

P.S. the oem remote is silver and has a sliding hatch on the lowe portiion that has additional tv features. The tv is and EDTV with 2 componant, 2 avi, 1dvi, 1rgb, and 1 coaxial imputs. I guess that is about it

You could get a learning remote and capture the signals yourself. Sony sells some good learning remotes in the $35 to $55 type price range.

Another option would be to get a JP1 compatible learning remote and JP1 cable, then you could learn the signals and build your own code for the TV. You could also see if the set supports any additional functions because it's easy to make a JP1 remote generate discrete codes.

A good JP1 remote for this purpose is the URC-8811 (which is $19). The JP1 cable would cost you $15.

Thanks for the reply robman. I think the second of the three remotes I did try was a sony one. All three of them were learning remotes. From what I gather though (at least on the models I tried) you have to get at least the first signal from the library. After you have THAT signal then you can start the "learning" process of programming individual buttons or macros.

The JP1 compatible one sounds interesting. Is there a place that has more information on it. Does the cable come with it or do I need to do some modifying? I did some searching but did not come up with much...:( A link would help out.

By the way guys (and gals) I am a total newbie to the whole remote control thing so bear with me. The information above is just how I understood the directions. I got the philips universal remote thinking they would suley have the code in THEIR library since it was magnavox. I was mistaken. Thanks again for your help. I know this is the place for the best answers

You have completely the wrong idea of how learning remotes work. You use learning when there isn't a compatible setup code in the remote. You don't need to find a working setup code first.

There's a link in my signature. Which search engine did you use? I just tried a search using Google and got lots of hits.

The JP1 process is user driven, it's not supported by the remote company, so you won't get a cable with a remote if you buy it at a store, but if you buy the remote from me I can sell you a cable at the same time.
