This is great news! The extra channel icons will particularly come in handy. For those of us that don't have access to the control room, will it be hosted somewhere? Daniel?

I can't wait to get my hands on it...so how do we get access? Will someone host it. I'm happy to do that if I can get a copy. I have enough bandwidth for about 30 downloads--295MB is a beefy file.

Guys...

It's not a question of bandwidth or hosting. The question is how URC wants the file distributed. For example, with the Alpha template for the MX-3000, we reserved that as an installer's tool. ie: Access to Alpha is one of the benefits of being an authorized URC dealer.

So far, there haven't been any discussions about whether or not to have the MX-980 graphics expansion pack and favorite channels packs be installer-only items. I don't know what stand we'll take on those items. If a descision is made to release them for general download, I'm sure they'd become available on URC's public web site. And I'll be sure to come in here and let everyone know.

Best regards,
Dale

Can the expansion pack templates be used with an already setup configuration? That is, can I replace the alpha template in a current setup without starting over from scratch? If so, how?

I don't envision this being released for everyone, hence the demand for those here. There seems to be an expectation among many that anything produced by URC is produced for them.

I hate to even call some posters DIYers. They don't do it themselves. They look for existing profiles they can copy. Then again there are some pretty sorry installers out there.

I just can't see any logical reason for URC not to release this to the general public. It's not as if they will cost CI's any revenue by doing so. Other than CI's, the only people that would possibly be interested in the expansion pack are, as you so ineloquently pointed out, DIYers. I find it unlikely that a DIYer such as myself would suddenly decide to go out and pay someone else to program their remote for them. In fact, quite the opposite is probably true. By upsetting a large base of both existing and potential customers, URC runs the risk that people like me will start to abandon their products altogether. IF URC wants to ignore the DIY market, that's their prerogative. I just don't think it's a fiscally responsible move on their part. I'm sure there are a lot of people just itching for an excuse to try out new models by the likes of RTI, UEI, etc ...

At the end of the day, in the world of the internet, no matter what "rules" URC wants to enforce, someone who wants the software will find a way to get it. This is no different than AMX, Crestron & Control4 software IS out there, you just have to look.

So as you state, does URC want to make it easy for DIY'ers to get the tools they need to make the remotes they paid for as good as they can be, or do they run the risk of "forcing" the DIY market elsewhere?

I have said it before, if the DIY market for URC products disapearred, URC would take a hit financially. The need those DIY sales.

wow. this has to be one of the most insulting things i've read on any forum here at RC.

and to boot, its completely ignorant. where can one copy a mx-980 profile??? we all had to start from a template at best, SMART GUY.... and many of us finished a project without so much as an instruction manual from URC.

-------------------------------

i'm fortunate to have a decent dealer unlike the cockroach i quoted above. he's offered to provide the new material to me. we just have to figure out the easiest way to do that.

Yes this is very offensive. As a DIYer, I didn't copy anyone elses profiles. I hadn't even seen a profile or the software before purchasing the MX-980. So, I downloaded the software provided by the retailer, read the meager instructions, played around with it long enough to sort it out, and then programmed the remote. I use variables, if-else, jumps, delays, press and hold, etc.

The forum itself is a great resource for generating new ideas. To suggest that those of us that decided to do this ourselves aren't up to the task is just ridiculous. If we wanted or needed to pay someone to program the thing, we would have done it--or still can.

For those of us that have found there way to this forum, give a bit of credit and make the updates available. If you're here, you've cleared the hurdle from my point of view.
