I wanna start automating my entire home, I've been doing a lot of research on x10 and Insteon protocol products and am getting the idea that insteon is better. can either control ceiling lights or is just plug in lights? What I want is to be able to control every device (home theater, lights, everything) with one universal remote preferbly touchscreen. I've looked at some nice ones that phillips has. I may eventually upgrade to voice recognition. can anyone with a little experience give me any info on this.

Either X10 or Insteon will be able to control all your lighting needs either through plug in modules or light switches. I have been using X10 equipment since 1996 with limited problems such as power line noise which has been corrected with filters. Insteon is supposed to be better with less problems but is also more expensive.

I would not install X10 unless your major factor is price. I've got a house full that works well but it is an old technology and protocol thats time has passed. Look at Insteon, Zwave, and UPB for a technology since you are just starting.

Hart2Hart,

Doesn't it depend on what country you live in? I live in Australia and I thought that none of Insteon, Zwave or UPB could be used here.
