The IR module is very oft requested; you can go to the Smarthome Insteon forum and add your voice if you like.

If you are already using X-10, do you have an X-10 phase coupler? If so, you can assign the same X-10 address to the kitchen load-controlling 3-way switch. You can always add an X-10 phase coupler if not already there, though you may be reluctant to spend money on more X-10 when you're in the process of going Insteon. Still, a 220V-dryer-plugin style passive coupler isn't very much. The same style active coupler is somewhat more, depending on your needs.

I'll probably have to get some sort of X10 phase coupler. I thought I had a good solution since X10.com has a sale in IR543s. I bought two (already own one). I put one of the new ones in the master bedroom so my wife could gain 880 Harmony control over the 3 X10 lamps in there and she loves it. The spare IR543 I thought might do the trick if I could just find a plug to plug it into that is on the second leg, and still within sight of my living room. I have RF wireless transceivers on both legs which works well with RF commands, but no universal remote control that will send X10 RF commands. The remotes X10 sells are not versatile enough to manage my equipment racks.

You don't happen to know where I can get that dryer plug coupler, do you?

Thanks

For a passive coupler (~$20 now on sale, regular $25), try: (4-pin), or (3-pin), from Smarthome.

For the active repeater/coupler (regular $90, now on sale for $80), you could try: (4-pin), or (3-pin), also from Smarthome.

The 4-pin passive has met my needs for several years (it was $30 when I bought it).

Just some advice for those switching out X1 lights for Insteon light switches:

X10 switches (at least the cheap ones) are a simple tap-on and tap-off. You can hit them almost anywhere to make them work. If you've always been tapping the top or bottom of the switch then you'll have "X-10 switch muscle memory".

Insteon switches are truly discretional. Tap the Top for ON, tap the Bottom for OFF. Tapping the bottom when the light is already OFF will do nothing.

Just thought I'd share. I still haven't shaken my X10 muscle memory and have had Insteon switches in the house for several days now.

I am intalling a complete Insteon system in my home that is under construction. Any idea if the dimmers can control ceiling fans or is this a lighting only application?

The dimmers are for lights only, here is what you need for a ceiling fan [Link: smarthome.com]

Dimmers cannot operate motors or fluorescent lighting, for this you use the relay switches.

Is anyone else surprised of the lack of Insteon Keypad controllers? I think there is just one that controls 5 devices. I suppose I could define a bunch of multi-key-press macro commands using just those 10-buttons, but that seems kinda lame. What's an X-10 user to do? 8-}

What type of Keypad are you referring to?

The KeypadLinc comes in both a 6-button configuration and an 8-button setup.

Are you talking about the RF remote?

What does everyone use for Insteon software? I have a modest setup right now but would like to expand and didn't know if something like Girder and the PLC/PLM would be good or if I should wait for the new NetLinc. I only found one review so far: [Link: liveautomatic.com]

It looks like it does simple timers etc, but I'm looking to do some triggers from my garage door opening. Does anyone have experience with the different packages?

InHomeFre is a good free low-end package
Powerhome is an awesome excellent can-do-anything package.
Stay away from Insteon's Houselink Desktop, the old one is so bad that the've announced a re-write coming soon, and stay away from the new one because, well, it will be brand new code

Was talking avout controlinc. I suppose with the added case KPL is a viable (albeit expen$ive) tabletop or wall-mount controller, but it's also a bit lite on ergonomics (only 8 buttons, small labels, etc).

I was able, using Powerhome, to set up my Controllincs so that they can control 18 devices, so that's what I'm using.

I just purchased an X10 Infared Mini Controller (IR543) and Super Socket wall outlet (SR227). Works perfectly with my application.

One minor issue is that the super socket is loud when switching on or off. I am wondering if the compatibale Insteon version INSTEON Outletlinc (2473SWH) is as loud when switching on or off.

Anybody with any experience with both as far as how loud it is when switching

Let me know

Thanks,
Scott
