I recently had a friend ask me a question about some issues he has with his toshiba hd dvd player. He used the hdmi out on the player to the dvi in on his samsung dlp tv. He said the tv has no image unless he turns off the television then turns it back on. I know that both dvi and hdmi are both digital but since hdmi carries audio is there an issue with the conversion that could be causing a problem or is it a fowl up on the install or could it be a programming issue? Thanks in advance!

Hmm... no help from me :-/ but I have the same setup and I'm interested in seeing if your friend gets a better picture with this conversion than straight component video.

RLymburner: well DVI and HDMI are the same video signal, the only difference between the 2 formats is HDMI can carry 8ch of audio as well, so there is no conversion happening, it's more like a gender change. And the the Digital signal will most likely be better quality than the Component.

DIRTE: Sorry no help on this one. What is happening is the TV doesn't refresh it's dig input to look for a signal, that may be in the setup or something, but I am not 100%

This has been a problem for many TV/DVDp combinations when an HDMI to DVI convertor is used. I haven't seen solutions other than manually reseting the TV, ie: turn off and on again, using component video, or simply using different equipment that matches better. It's an unfortunate situation for early adopters who have purchased DVI TVs that are semi-outdated by the new HDMI world.

My HDTV is set to alway return to a certain input when first turned on. I programmed it to start on the Component1 input, and that's where my DVD player hooks in.

It could be that your friend's TV has the same feature, and isn't on the right input for DVI until it's turned ON. He likely switches the input to watch regular TV after viewing a DVD, and might not realize it has to be back on the DVI input for his HDMI/DVI signal to work. Then it automatically returns to the DVI input when turned ON again.

Have him toggle through the inputs next time instead of turning the TV off and ON. It might find his DVD signal that way.

The DVi input on the source must be streaming signal first before the TV will accept it, the TV is looking for the HDCP encoding first. Make sure if you are using a macro that you have not only enough turn on time for the TV, but now was well for the source.
