I need to buy another SONY RM-U306 remote. It works my SONY STR-K740P (HT-DDW740) a/v Digital audio system, which is supurb!

I have bought piles of remotes (up to $50 bucks) and none of them work all my components.

My system "is not" unusual. Have 1) DirTV Hughes HD receiver - 1) Panasonic 53" HD-TV- 1) Panasonic DVD player- 1) Toshiba HiFi VHS- 1) Sony 51CD Player- 1) Sony STR-K740P a/v surround audio receiver system. Have just added a Magnavox mrv640 DVD Recorder. (Plus other non-remote descrete audio comnonents).

That totals (6) principle components + (1) DVDRecorder (accessory use extra). All are good "Name Brand" products. Yet, I still can not find (1) programable remote that will operate all (6) of them!!???!! This is insane!

Now we can't find the Sony oem Audio system remote nor a replacement!?! HELP!

Electronic technology of a decade ago is hardly recognized today... that is accept for "remote controls" which still use the same basic chips and work, (just as clunky to program), as they were 15 years ago. The only major difference is that they are now a lot more expensive... for what?

Any idea's ?

Have you checked with Harmony? That model may already be in their files.

Your receiver is using a new codeset, AV2, but it can by changed to the old codeset AV1. See this thread. Once you change, the sony codes in all you remotes should work. The only universal remotes with preset code for sony receivers set to AV2 mode, are the one-for-all URC-6131 & 9960(Kameleon), the code is AUD1758.

There is a HUGE diference between the dime store remotes your used to and a REAL remote. If you added up the dollars you spent on $40 remotes, you could have had one that did everything you could dream of!
Its like the Mastercard commercial; $350 for a remote that actually works like you want! PRICELESS!!!!!

Try changing your terminology, bud. Throw out that "programmable" crap, and put "learning" into your vernacular. Follow the advice of the posters above.

My first learning remote was purchased in 1988. Maybe you should adjust your thread title to 1981.

Sounds like your remote are working like it 1991 because your buying remotes with 15 year old technology in them. While a $20-$40 JP1 remote can do awesome things with enough time and patience, you really need to spend $100+ to get the Features your decribing here.....
Bare minimum you should be loking at a URC-100

Have you looked at a Philips Pronto NG 7000? Not 1991 technology.

I would argue that the technology in even the best remotes out there today is pretty stagnant. We've had the same issues for years... yet the manufacturers fail to address the issues.

How long have we been coming up with ways to deal with non-discrete on/off codes, and track which units are on and off. With the ability to define a variable that is set, and then make decisions based on the variable, this wouldn't require going through an extra "Is the TV On?" kind of screen on the programmable remote.

Although, it would still be better to treat the cause rather than the symptom. Get manufacturers to integrate complete discrete codes (or only buy those that do) and you won't even need elaborate workarounds, whether based on high or low grade technology. :-)
