Someone recently told me that it is a good idea to use a regular front speaker as a center channel. So, I would have 2 front speakers and then an additional speaker acting as the center channel rather than purchasing an actual center channel. He said that this gives fuller sound. Logistically, that makes sense. What do you all have to say?

Only if the alternative center channel is a wimpy, undersized one. Ones that use the same drivers as the left/right speakers (perhaps in a different mix) should be fine. Rear channel speakers are also often undersized and some prefer to use "main" speakers (or perhaps where there are multiple main sizes, a smaller version).

Nothing wimpy about a PMC BB5/XBD centre channel.

I always thought that the THX specification reccomends that the center channel be the same as the front LR?

The thought is to have a speaker that is timbre matched to your front mains. This means that they produce the same tonal qualities.
So, technically, yes, an additional front speaker fits the bill.
But, many manufacturers make center channel speakers that use the same drives for mids and highs as their larger front channels..
I have Definitive BP2002's and a C/L/R 2002. These both use the same drivers...

Make sure the center speaker is magnetically shielded so that it is not affected by the TV or vise/versa

What part of "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." do you not understand? |
