Only if the alternative center channel is a wimpy, undersized one. Ones that use the same drivers as the left/right speakers (perhaps in a different mix) should be fine. Rear channel speakers are also often undersized and some prefer to use "main" speakers (or perhaps where there are multiple main sizes, a smaller version).
