The thought is to have a speaker that is timbre matched to your front mains. This means that they produce the same tonal qualities.

So, technically, yes, an additional front speaker fits the bill.

But, many manufacturers make center channel speakers that use the same drives for mids and highs as their larger front channels..

I have Definitive BP2002's and a C/L/R 2002. These both use the same drivers...
