I'm building a bookshelf installation for a television monitor and speakers which will only be about 12-15" deep. The shallow depth means I can't fit the stereo components in the same area. They would be located in some cabinets around 15 feet away. The stereo is needed to provide sound for the TV...so I think I would put the TV tuner there as well. Which means it would be kind of funny to point a remote at the side wall cabinets to control the television.

Is there a way to control the stereo components behind closed cabinet doors. It seems like a RF remote would do this, but I don't need the extensive Macro capability, and would love not to spend $1,500 to do it. I'm new to this - any help would be appreciated.

How about the ProntoPro and the RF extender for it? Could get both for around 800 to $900. I have them and they work TERRIFIC!

That's what I thought cost around 1500. I assume you buy the remote itself, and them a RF box. The RF box sits in the cabinet with the stereo gear, right? Then you have to wire an antenna outside of the cabinet connected to the RF box. Then I understand that you need to buy 5 or 6 (however many components you have) Infrared transmitters which each connect to the RF box and sit in front of the individual components. I think they were about $40-50 each. again I may be wrong.

I would say a simple Xantech IR kit would be the best solution. Have a look at the hidden link kit on the following page. With this you could place the IR reciever on top of the TV, run a small cable to the stereo and have the IR emitters connected to each component. This would also give you more expansion options in the future if you wanted to do whole house IR or something like that.

We offer the TSU-6000 and the RFX-6000 RF Extender for under $800 shipped.

The RF Extender includes 8 IR blasters. There's nothing else you'd need to buy.

Cammo's suggestion is also my recommendation. In addition to Xantech's offerings, you might investigate the IR extender kits offered by (among others) Crutchfield. You shouldn't have to spend more than a couple of hundred dollars.

You place a tiny adhesive-backed IR receiver module near the front of you TV (where you would "logically" point your remote). A thin wire relays the signal from there to the a hub in your stereo cabinet. The hub then relays it through IR repeaters positioned inside the cabinet where your components can "see" them, and you're there! Good luck, and let us know how you finally set your system up. -Bruce
