I have a small HT that I'm setting up in the basement of my condo and I'm interested in hearing opinions on what color is best for the walls of the home theater. I would imagine a flat, dark color would be good. But I need to hear from the experts

I agree, but I do not consider myself an expert. I would also add neutral (depending on how dark it is).

While some would argue that a very dark blue or even black is best, I decided on a very neutral beige in a flat finish with offwhite trim; of course, I use my theatre room for more than just watching movies;it is very peaceful and relaxing; but you really should just go with a color that you like.

New, It also depends on what you can live with when the lights are on. The important factor is reflection of the light coming from your display, and ambient (background) light. For paint, find a very flat (matte) neutral tone, like in the grey, beige, brown range. Or, if you can, check out curtains, like in the theaters.

Plus I would add that it depends on the device you use, and light. A TV is less affected, but a Projector more. At my dad's house, the TV is in a room with a patio door, He has a vary pale couch (cream color mostly). On a sunny day, the light reflects of f the couch and you get a big white blob on the screen.

If your theater will be a multi-use room like most of us, I too would recommend staying with neutral tones. As a professional painter I have applied many Kelly-Moore colors in various "environmental shades/earth tones" that are nice for home theater and also very attractive when the lights are on. A few I have seen and would recommend: Cascade Beige, Wood Moss, Fig Cookie (all darker toned); Malibu Beige & Snip of Tannin (as lighter muted tone alternatives). All these and many others look great with a contrasting (lighter) trim from a similar color palette or a muted white/off white. Go with their Premium Interior Flat for the walls and a "low sheen/egg shell" for the trim work. Avoid multiple colors and minimize trim work on the walls immediately surrounding the screen.

Also a lot of people post pics of their rooms, so you might get some good ideas.

A.J. -- are you sure those are paint colors - they sound like they could be Ben and Jerry's ice cream flavors :)

Cheers, Jim.

Jim: I am not too sure I would like a cone filled with wood moss, but I might give a try of fig cookie :-)

The room has no other purpose but Movie viewing (an extra living room in basement) So I will indeed go with the very dark non gloss navy. The trim is all wood so I dont have to paint it. THanks guys for the info.

Wood and navy sounds like a nice combination. Enjoy!
