My receiver now says it is picking up something
on what it shows as 27-5 East and 27-6 Mntn although
they sometimes display whatever is on the nearest
channel (25-1 or 29-1 respectively) and sometimes
give nothing at all. Any ideas about what is going
on here?

I got the same for a few days, but after a re-scan last night, they disappeared. I had Fox appearing on both channels.

Sorry for the late reply in this one.

Actually, a couple weeks ago I went to Active Surplus on Queen st (between Spadina and University on south side), and purchased a Terk indoor UHF/VHF antenna for $14.95 + taxes (saw the same on in Buffalo when I purchased my ATSC receiver for $60 US). I replaced my RCA one and this one works even better. They have an enormous RCA indoor/outdoor antenna as well for $70, but it would look ugly in our condo.

I live right on Harbourfront on the 18th floor so I receive excellent signal strength on all the American stations (I even get the elusive WB station at times). On the flipside, I can't catch any Canadian channels consistently.

I can't remember the model number of the RCA antenna, but it was the only indoor powered one available. I had some trouble place it due the fact that it's powered. The Terk is much more flexible this way (not powered).

Hi Hogie. Which antenna model did you get and
roughly how much did it cost? Where abouts are
you located?

I did a re-scan the other day and picked up several more signals from Rochester. One of my co-workers was kind enough to do a write up. A lot of the same channels, but nice to have some redundancy ;)

Write up:

I am receiving several more stations from Rochester. The most remarkable
station coming out of Rochester would have to be PBS who is offering four
channels within their multicast! WXXIHD carries PBS HD; WXXIQ is carrying
children's programming from 5P-9P with Classic Arts Showcase taking up the
remainder of the schedule; WXXI-Create is solely focussing on cooking,
travel, fine living, and "how-to" programming 24 hours a day; and WXXITV
is carrying the analogue programming equivalent in SD with 12 hours of
children's programming each weekday.

Seven digital over-the-air PBS channels are currently operating in the
Toronto market. In addition I'm receiving a digital signal from WQLN PBS
Erie, Pennsylvania which will bring that number to at least eight, perhaps
more.

WHEC (NBC) is coming in with a high definition channel along with NEWS
10NBC Weather Plus. 59-3 WHAM (ABC) is available in high definition as
well. Here is an example of what is currently available in Toronto with
an ATSC receiver and an indoor/outdoor UHF antenna:

2-1 WGRZ-HD (NBC)
2-2 WGRZ-SD (NBC WX Plus)
4-1 WIVB-HD (CBS)
4-3 WLNO-SD (UPN)
5-1 CBLT-DT (CBC)
7-1 WKBW-HD (ABC)
7-2 WNGS-SD (RTN)
8-1 WROC-DT (CBS)
9-1 CFTO HD (CTV)
10-1 WHEC-HD (NBC)
10-2 WHEC-DT (NBC WX Plus)
21-1 WXXIHD (PBS)
21-2 WXXIQ (PBS)
21-3 WXXIC (PBS)
21-4 WXXITV (PBS)
23-1 WIVB-HD (CBS)
23-3 WNLO-SD (UPN)
25-1 CBLFT-D (CBC)
29-1 WUTV-HD (FOX)
29-2 WUTV-SD (FOX)
29-3 WUTV-EN (FOX)
43-1 WNED-HD (PBS)
43-2 WNED-SD (PBS)
43-3 Think B (PBS)
53-1 CITYHD (CHUM)
59-3 59-3 (ABC)
66-1 CKXT-DT (SunTV)

Tropospheric ducting, a feature of VHF/UHF broadcasting, is enabling the
reception of television signals over long distances. Inversions in the
atmosphere during summer allow the signals to tunnel through a layer of
cool air existing under a layer of warm air, thus facilitating signal
reception over great distances. Nevertheless, Rochester should be
receivable in Toronto under normal conditions with a proper antenna
situated outdoors. Check out my next message in this thread for an
overview of what might be available over-the-air in Toronto this summer.

Happy channel surfing!

Thanks Hogie. I'll check out Active Surplus, that last time I visited that store, it was still at the old first floor location.

Yeah, I was pulling in several stations from Rochester a few days ago, along with TBN, which hasn't happened in a while.

Hey Daniel, have you any updates on whether Global is getting another extension or if they will be going OTA this month?

Hey There,
For those that are still looking for a directional indoor antenna I bought a Zenith silver sensor from a store called above all for $16.95 + tax today. They're located in the bloor and bathurst area. I seem to get better reception with this antenna than with the Terk antenna.
Cheers!

Hi, I am new here but here is the answer I got on another forum when I had the same issue.

*****************************************************

Sorry, those aren't real channels. We're chasing a ghost somewhere in the encoding/PSIP system. We did a big upgrade of the PSIP generator software last week, and it's having some interesting results. It may also be related to our Fox splicer, which had some problems over the weekend. Don't you just love Mondays...

Anyway, back to the reason I registered here. From reading back a couple pages it looks like I am not the only one having problems receiving CFTO? The PSIP info has changed from D 09-1 CFTO HD to
D 40-1. I am also having problems locking onto CKXT. I am assuming all the Toronto channels are broadcasting digital from the CN Tower?

CTV seems to have continual PSIP glitches; one day it's 9-1, the next it's 40-1 or even 40-3 or 40-4. What's your receiver, and exactly what difficulties are you having receiving it (since you seem to know that the PSIP has changed)?

If you're really in Port Hope, that's over 90 kilometers away from the CN Tower. CKXT only broadcasts at 2.8kW, and I believe it's non-directional (unlike City). Even with much of that distance over water, it's still extremely unlikely that you're going to get that station reliably.

Actually, after talking with the good folks at CFTO, the engineers wrote back to me last week and said they made some changes in order to allow more hardware to tune it in (notably the ATI HDTV Wonder).

I've been able to watch CFTO reliably ever since (something I could not do before)...but when I last tried, ATI's autoscan tuned it in as "9-1 CFTO HD', and as usual, I only got audio...but when I manually added channel 40, it came in perfectly. I can live with that. It comes in now and that's all that counts to me.
