I've been tossing up the idea of adding home automation devices around the house for lights, thermostats and perhaps the garage etc..

I have an Logitech Harmony 1100 and a Harmony One. I like everything about the remote except the capability of controlling any kind of home automation device.

I have not decided on what brand for the home automation devices yet. I want to start with picking a remote first. Wifi capability would be very nice.

I'm also open for android and ipad based but would still prefer remote with at least a few hard buttons for common used functions of the AVR, Cable box and TV.

Bottom line is I would like something similar to the Logitech Harmony remote that can do home automation.

Control4 can do all that but cost wise you are going orders of magnitude higher. It all depends on what you want to do but I would think that very few Control4 installs are less than $5k and everything most be done by a dealer. They have traditional remote controls and you can use iPhones, iPads, PCs, Android, etc. they also integrate with Nest and have their own t-stat. You can also add in your security system, fireplaces, blinds, front door, wifi cams, whole house a/v distribution, etc, etc. The only limit is cost.

I have had a system for a few years and I am fairly happy with it, but I wish more of it was DIY. I have continually added lights to my system where now 90% of my lighting is on the system. But the switches/dimmers are around $150-$200 plus installation. Multiply that by a few dozen, and add in close to $1000 for the controller, plus a bunch of six button keypads and you hit $10k pretty quickly.
