Okay, I'm about to purchase a new DVD player and need some help picking one out....Basicly I'm stuck between the Sony and Yamaha but haven't ruled out the Toshiba. I'm only looking for a single disc, not a multi. But, I am looking for features and easy of use. And most importantly, display and audio reproduction...(Sony seems to have a bad rep lately). Also any know "bugs" or problems would help in the decision making process.
Thanks for any help.......

As long as you havent ruled out the Toshiba, I will reccomend the 3109 or the 2109. The main difference between the two is that the 3109 has HDCD decoding and it also has a two disc capacity. Although I know you are not looking for multi, the 3109 is actually pretty cool. It has only one drive and you can switch discs while the other one is still playing, so its not like a cartridge. Besides that they are pretty much the same. For value I think it is hard to beat those two Toshiba DVD players. The picture is absolutely beautiful. So if you dont care about HDCD or having to get up to change between discs, than the 2109 might be a good choice. Oh yeah, I think the 2109 only has one digital output also. Happy shopping. There is a good search already on here under the name "DVD players under 300" But its really about any player around 250 to 500. Good Luck. I would watch out for the Sony though, Ive read so much bad stuff about them, I would be scared to buy one.

Actually, the main difference in the 3109 and the 2109 is the 3109 has on board Dolby Digital/DTS decoding, as the 2109 does not. If you have a DD receiver, then the 2109 is a better value, it can be for ~$200.

I am also looking for a new DVD player and have all but made up my mind to purchase the DVP-S7700. But I haven't heard any "bad stuff" and would like to hear them if there are any. Should I reconsider purchasing that model? Are all the Sony players prone to "bad stuff" or specific models?

Thnx, Mac

I've been trying to decide on the same models.
the 3109 or the s530d. I'm going w/the s530d I think. I've heard more bad about the toshiba than the sony. At least the newer sony models are fixed. I heard the toshiba remotes were a bitch.
Here's some stuff I found on audioreview.com

SONY SERIAL NUMBERS To AVOID: 0100001 - 0119840
0800001 - 0953000
10001 thru 119840
80001 thru 953000
You can find the serial number on the outside of the box by locating a barcode sticker on the side of the box (usually). At the bottom of the barcode itself will be a number that starts with S01#######. The Number following the S01 will be the serial number on the back of the unit. This is also the bar code label that must be sent in to cliam the 5 free cds. To find a MANF DATE, look on top of the bax, there should be a label with a bar code and a date at the botton like: 11/12/99. This should be the date it ws shipped from the warehouse.

I had never thought much about Toshiba until Stereo review rated the sd-2108 the best dvd under
$1000.00, and it was way under($399). I decided to test out several Pioneer, panasonic, and Sony.
All single disc w/similar features, and the Toshiba won hands down in my opinion. It has now been in my HT for 1 1/2 years w/out a single problem . My brother purchased the sd3109 and it also seems to work very well. the remote is very easy to use, and both have lots of cool features.
As far as wondering whether or not to go with Yamaha- I'd have to pass that one up. Not trying to offend anyone, but it seems that the you are paying top dollar for mid grade quality. Let Yamaha do what they do best-Home Theater receivers.
