As a programmer, I walk into a lot of jobs, unsure whether IR problems are files or wiring.

I was wondering, is there a cheap little IR detector out there, that will simply flash when it sees an IR signal?

I could build one for about $5, but I would rather find something off the shelf (for lets say <$25).

Perfect! I guess my local store doesn't carry them so I haven't seen one before.

I never looked for one, in one their stores. But it's probably one of those things you'd have to ask for, as it's so easy to not notice it. Not to mention the fact the RS now puts their stuff on the self in a manner of no reason, other than by RS part numbers now. Or it at least seems that way. I hate asking them where something is, as they sometimes have no clue either. So I have them look it up on their PC first, to see if they have what I ask for. Then we look for it. Unless the guy is damn sure as to where it is.

Here's another way - happen to have a camcorder or digital camera? They will pick up the infrared pulses.

If you have a Palm OS handheld (Palm III or higher) here's the coolest and handiest program ever. It's an IR monitor that allows you to view strength and pulse length of transmitted IR. Also, It's FREE!

A few years ago I asked myself this same question. I went out and got 9from Radio Shack) a nine volt battery, an IR phototransistor, a couple of resistors, and a green LED.

I soldered this mess directly onto the battery terminals in such a way that IR coming into the phototransistor turned on the green LED. Of course, incandescents and sunlight lit it up, so I had to store it in the dark. Meanwhile, it lived in my glove compartment and the battery lasted for about three years.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I'm telling you, you can find a palm III for CHEAP these days. The IR Monitor program I posted is worth the money alone, besides all the cool things a Palm lets you do besides.

Never be late or forget an appointment, address, ToDo again!
