A few years ago I asked myself this same question. I went out and got 9from Radio Shack) a nine volt battery, an IR phototransistor, a couple of resistors, and a green LED.
I soldered this mess directly onto the battery terminals in such a way that IR coming into the phototransistor turned on the green LED. Of course, incandescents and sunlight lit it up, so I had to store it in the dark. Meanwhile, it lived in my glove compartment and the battery lasted for about three years.

A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything. "The biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place." -- G. “Bernie” Shaw |
