I now have a Squeezebox Boom on order and should get it within a week or so. Now I need to decide which Pronto controller application to get.

ProntoSqueeze looks neat but I understand that the latest version needs PEP V2. I have not yet migrated to PEP V2 (even though I would like to get WPA2) because the migration seems to be somewhat difficult... It appears some people also have problem with the latest firmware and their WPA connection.

I did try Barry's SlimPronto a while back and know that Barry provides excellent support. I don't know what his GUI looks like these days though.

Any recommendation? (I am currently running PadOne and am pleased with it but it will not control a Squeezebox)

Thanks.

You may want to ask each developer to give you a limited version of the script to see which one you like. I think its a matter of preference. Both scripts are excellent and do pretty much the same thing.

I am partial to Barry because he seems to provide quick responses to any question I may have. Even the silly ones! lol

I am currently planning that the next version will be delivered in PEP2 format. I will be checking with my users to see what kind of problems it may cause them before I finalize that decision.

Either module is priced very low, so you could just buy them both. I do not provide a demo version due to the low price ($29.95)

...don't forget this amounts to a lot more in Canadian dollars...

Do you have any pictures of your module or something to get an idea, I couldn't find a web site. I thought you had one but did not find it...

Unless you are introducing functionality which can only be implemented in PEP2 my vote would be to continue releasing the SlimPronto module in PEP1 format. PEP2 users will still be able to merge the module into their own XCF while at the same time users who have chosen to continue using PEP1 will be able to open the file in PEP1.

I have now received my Squeezebox Boom. Network setup on WEP network went OK but I am having difficulties with silly things like adding to favorites. We'll see how it will go on the long run, I've had it only for a day.

Sound on the Boom is good but not as impressive as the Boston Acoustics Horizon Duo/Solo line up. I am also running the SqueezePlay on my music server and so far, have not been able to synchronize the two with different sound levels. I currently have totally lost sound output from the Squeezeplay and am unable to figure out how to get it back.

I ran the ProntoSqueeze demo and really liked it but it seems Barry's SlimPronto has more features and it runs on PEP1.  I have the latter on order.

I would say that you should get both ProntoSqueeze and SlimPronto. The latter has more features but takes quite a lot longer to load. So I use SlimPronto if I am going to listen to the music for a substantial period of time but Prontosqueesze if I just want to listen to an album or two.

Ah. Maybe that explains what I am going through with SlimPronto: I get the impression that buttons are unresponsive sometimes. I also ended up turning the volume all the way down without realizing it...

BTW, I believe that ProntoSqueeze does not have the volume control.

It would surprise me if it didn't. But I don't know as I changed the buttons so that they change the volume on my amp rather than on SqueezeCenter.

The next version of slimPronto has the ability to control a preamp/amp for 4 functions for each player. It can turn the amp on or off, chnage the volume up or down. It does this by allowing the user to configure 4 buttons for each player and set the action lists for those buttons as needed.

Most slugish behavior after slimpronto loads is generally related to network issues. There are many tools provided to assist in tracking these issues down.

SlimPronto's design goal was to keep aligned to the active (as far as it is concerned) player no matter how that player changes. For example if you pause the player at the player (e.g. transporter), or using a different pronto Slimpronto knows that and if it was asleep, it will discover that as soon as it wakes up. That does cause the application to go through processes that are not always fruitful. I might be able to improve that under the new firmware but then compatability issues arise.

If you are having sluggish button response I suggest you avail yourself of some of the monitoring/debug capabilities. Needless to say i will be glad to review and assist.

Is there a demo video or are there screen captures of SlimPronto anywhere?

If you email me (see my profile) I will send you the "Purchase kit" which includes the manual which does include screenshots.

I will be working over the next few weeks to finalize the next release which will be fully checked out for Squeezebox 7.4. The only issue remaining is whether I will maintain the base as PEP1 or PEP2. I have seen no problems using the PEP 1 base for the latest firmware in the Pronto. I just feed the PEP1 base into PEP 2 after ensuring that all the sounds I need are in the PEP2 sound folder.

You can set it in the settings page in ProntoSqueeze.

BTW Just betatesting Prontosqueeze 2,x and it is looking great, works even better that 1,9x, which is already fast as a shark.

Will soon be ready for release.

It would seem a little crazy if I didn't comment in this forum.

As everyone knows ProntoSqueeze V2 is being released for PEP2 which I think will be the way of most developers like Barry, Lyndel and myself as it has ways on protecting our investment of time and energy (Barry send me an email if you want to know some of the .PJS evils)

While I am releasing V2 I will continue to offer 1.9x to non PEP2 owners. While 1.9 wont see any further enhancements I will review to make sure it works with the current version of SqueezeCenter/SqueezeServer.

1.8+ and 2.0 support controlling the volume of the SqueezeBox.

V2 should be out this week, there are a few gremlins in 7.4 so I'd advise most to stick with 7.3.3 and wait for 7.4.1.

FYI Barry music_services is now apps in case you didn't know as it's not documented.

Regards

Nick
