Both units (the 500 and 1000) need to be powered on to work as they both convert IR to Bluetooth and you can't do that passively. You either need a live USB port (like your HR-20) or a AC-to-USB adapter. The 1000 adds the ability to sense (through one of the PS3's USB ports which are only active if the PS3 is on) whether the PS3 is on or off.
