well, I think I know what the problem is, and I hope SchmartStuff updates their info:
the PS3IR-500, unlike the 1000, needs to stay on at all times! so if you plug it in the PS3's USB, once you turn it off, it will no longer respond! You have to plug it into a live USB port!!!!!!
Luckily I have a Directv HR-20 right beside it which has a USB port that is always live, and so it keeps it on.

Both units (the 500 and 1000) need to be powered on to work as they both convert IR to Bluetooth and you can't do that passively. You either need a live USB port (like your HR-20) or a AC-to-USB adapter. The 1000 adds the ability to sense (through one of the PS3's USB ports which are only active if the PS3 is on) whether the PS3 is on or off.
