Sony's RM-AV2100 LCD touchscreen remote is an upgrade of their previous model with twice the memory for learning, five times the macros, a better built-in code library, greater customization and many more improvements.

Strengths:
PROMISE to control many things
Weaknesses:
Doesn't even work my SONY products right out of the box
Review:
Doesn't even control my SONY products right out of the box. My SONY XBR 32" monitor for example--- this remote wouldn't even adjust volume -- went up but wouldn't allow down !!! Waste of money---- returned in AM ASAP Even at bargain price of $99 -- not worth the time and problems.

Strengths:
Cheap price for universal learning
Weaknesses:
Annoying hum whenever the backlight is on, so loud I could hear it when watching TV! Stupid Grid under the LCD. Can't see the screen without the backlight on.
Review:
I bought the remote and took it out of it's package and noticed that stupid grid. I then put the batteries in and setup my Panasonic TV. As soon as I started using it an annoying hum was present anytime the backlit was on-so loud I could hear it over the TV!!. I put it back in the package and back to the store I went. Bought a Pronto TSU2000 online for about 50.00 more than the stupid Sony.

Strengths:
Amazing compatability with A/V components.
Weaknesses:
A little hard to channel surf
Review:
This is the first inexpensive remote I have found that controls everything I have (including my LD Player) With a little time, you can program it to do whatever you want. The Learning Funcition is incredible!

Strengths:
Does everytime I need it to, looks great, is $300 less than the Philips Pronto, very convenient, simple programming.
Weaknesses:
Screen is hard to see without backlighting, can't move buttons on touch pad around, doesn't have a rechargeable battery stand option, unlike the Philips, don't like the location of the channel buttons.
Review:
I can't believe I paid $100 for a remote control (retail is $180, ecost.com has them for $99), but it's a gadget and it actually works well. I removed 4 remotes with this universal remote and if I owned more stuff, I could remove their remotes too. It can control about 15 things (according to this website) so it's quite powerful. The programming is pretty easy and with some features that I found difficult to use, I found short cuts or easy ways around them via the user tips on this website. It's pretty big, but very light, so while not comfortable in the hand, it's not a heavy lead weight.
I just love the way this thing looks. It matches the Sony Wega TV so perfectly. I have so much fun programming all the little tricks into this thing (like opening or closing the DVD tray via remote). I wish that I could move some of the buttons on the touch pad around ala Philips Pronto, because with some of the functions hidden (because I don't use them), there are comestically disagreeable gaps in between the buttons on the touch screen. I think it would be a nice touch if the silver on the unit was metal rather than painted plastic. I wish that the channel select button was not on the bottom right hand of the remote. It should be on the top sides of the remote so that I don't have to hold the remote by the end to have my thumb on the channel surfing button.
All in all, one of my favorite new toys. Not sure any remote control is worth $100, but man, I sure do love this thing.

Strengths:
Total flexibility in key assignment. Good use of labeling options for selected keys. Strong IR signal field. I like the fact that the Channel, Volume and Muting hard keys turn on the unit to the prior component. Easy to navigate through the setup options.
Weaknesses:
No timers to associate with macros for one touch cable/satellite box channel changes.
Review:
You cant beat the present price on this unit, and in the process, get what appears to be a well manufactured, handsome and flexible device to unclutter the coffee table in the media room. I have owned speciality remotes for many years, and one comes to mind that had a built in shock absorber incorporated into the case. This came in very handy when the unit somehow slid off the bed or coffee table. I hope the Sony has some shock system in place internally, cause you know they're gonna get bounced around periodically.

Review 18 made on Sunday February 25, 2001 at 4:36 PM.
Strengths:
1. Decent price, good dollar value 2. Learns Airboard wireless keyboard commands for HTPC users, including modifiers (ctrl+alt+?) 3. Lots of memory 4. Easy to program
Weaknesses:
1. LCD tough to see when not illuminated 2. Limited custom button layout 3. Awkward to hold 4. Light duration preprogrammed
Review:
It has many strenghts but it somewhat offset by ergonomical issues. Biggest quirk I've seen is the duration of macro commands. Power buttons & some number buttons have a very short IR blast while others hast 2-3 seconds. This can cause a problem with some HTPC commands either lasting too long or not happening long enough to perform its task. I am able to change change resolution, open WinDVD and YXY with a macro, and have full remote control over WinDVD & Winamp. Easy to program but limited custom button arrangement makes memorizing your layouts a must. Overall a good bang for your buck.

Review 17 made on Sunday February 4, 2001 at 8:56 PM.
Strengths:
Easy Operation, MASSIVE Compatability, Programmable Hard Keys. Outstanding battery life.
Weaknesses:
-Again-backlight doesn't reset when a key is pressed. -Relatively few labels for the LCD keys.
Review:
An outstanding product. For around $100, you cannot go wrong. I Programmed an RCA/Proscan TV, RCA VCR, Sci. Atl. cable box, Philips DVD, Sony Receiver, Pioneer Tape deck, and an RCA CD player in about 30 minutes. The 2100 had product codes for all devices, but as expected I had to add several additional functions to each component (especially the Sony Receiver.) This took another 30 minutes, and I was ready to program some Macros. Even they took only about 15 minutes. The instruction manual was somewhat cryptic, however the programming information from this site made it a quick job. Now even the Sony Manual makes sense. As mentioned, the LCD backlight timeout is an annoyance, but the compatability and flexibility more than make up the difference. The minimal amount of labels for the LCD is probably its greatest shortcoming, but I found labels that were at least only slightly off, and used them. The AV2100 has a great useable range, and plenty of compatability for most home users. If you are even contemplating a more expensive remote, you are probably in a different audiophile category than I, as I cannot see spending more for a remote than I did for a component, but I do not feel as though I settled for this product. Give it a try and you will be impressed. I have been.
