Strengths:Controls everything very well. Flexible programming with easy to set up macros. Can control 12+ components, more than any other system I've seen.
Weaknesses:The backlighting only comes on when pressing the "Light" button - how tough would it have been to make it come on when you press any button? Other power remotes have a light sensor and turn on backlighting when in use if room light is dim. The AV2100 almost always requires the backlighting to be seen and yet the backlighting turns off in mid-use and you have to press the Light button again. It's silly and annoying.
Review:Aside from the display problems, this is the best remote I have ever seen, touched, or even been in the same room with. Now, we just need our devices to all support On and Off as separate commands so that a macro can always make sure a device is in the On state before executing its next command (instead of sending the Power command, which is just as likely to turn the unit off).

Strengths:Controls all my A/V gear.
4 remotes to 1, you do the math.
Weaknesses:Backlighting could be brighter.
Costly.
Review:Like most of you, I have more remotes than I would like. A friend recently bought a refurbished RM-AV2100 and gave it high marksand suggested I try one. So I thought, why not.

I was very pleased with it's easy of use right out of the box and had all my gear set up in a few minutes. I only had to teach the remote one button from my DVD remote and that was easy.

Try it out, I think you'll enjoy using this mini-laptop computer. At least that's what my wife calls it.

Strengths:Replaced all of my remotes
Really Impressive looking
Incredible learning capability
Easy to set up
Weaknesses:Hard to see screen without light turned on
Non customizable screen
Not enought buttons
Review:Even with its faults this is an awesome remote. I bought this with the intention of returning it after a test drive but once i found out how usefull it is I had to keep it.
It should be noted that I only have Sony equipment, except for my DSS reciever which is general instruments, but it operates that perfectly.
I had no trouble programming the remote to learn the signals from my other remotes, but recall, they were sony too. Incredibly this remote controls some of my equpiment better than the original remotes.
I recently got a Sony Mega CD changer with a 2 way lcd remote, and I wish the AV2100 had two way capability, but aside from that i was able to program it to do all of the functions of the CD changer remote.

I would definitely recommend this remote to anyone with a lot of stuff!

Review 27 made on Sunday October 7, 2001 at 6:18 PM.
Strengths:Controls every single thing I own.
Weaknesses:Hard to see in dim light; programming was hard due to dreadful book.
Review:I have tried maybe a half-dozen "universal" remotes. This is the first one that had enough memory to learn every command I needed. For that alone, I give it four stars. I'd give it five if the LCD display were higher in contrast. The backlight solves that at night, but you have to push the "light" button to use it.

Review 26 made on Wednesday September 5, 2001 at 1:27 AM.
Strengths:Good Looking
Easy to learn other remotes
Weaknesses:Very poor backlight
Lettering on the screen is to dim in contrast to the backlight
(The lettering being very small and the lack of a contrast adjustment is enough to make me return it tomorrow.
Review:Great capability
Good Looking
However, the display is enough of a problem that I won't keep it

Strengths:Works on just about any product with an IR Remote. Flexible programming.
Weaknesses:Poor display. No setting for Auto Backlight. Controls can be confusing.
Expensive.
Review:One of my reasons for buying this remote was because the Tivo remote I have is pathetic on my Toshiba TV and I have seven remotes for my various stuff.
The toss up was between this and the Pronto. Despite the appeal of the Pronto's flexibility, this won at half the cost.
Within one hour of putting the batteries in, I had it set up for everything, even my Tivo unit which I had to teach it. It was even flexible enough to allow the TV and Tivo share the same function button.
It's a real shame the contrast of the display is so pathetic, because otherwise this seems to be a pretty good unit.

Review 24 made on Friday July 20, 2001 at 5:29 PM.
Strengths:Flexible, controlled all my devices (sort of), programmable (sort of)
Weaknesses:Re-programming of some keys didn't work, can't get some features to work properly. Several key functions do work properly without re-programming. Hard to see display in many lighting settings. Needs two hands to operate.
Review:At face value, the Sony is a cool, useful way to eliminate several remote controls. I found many of the "out of the box" setup for several devices did not program all the keys properly (e.g. an older NEC TV, my new receiver - Sony has separate "tuner" and an "amp" devices and I couldn't get both to work properly). Re-programming keys is a great concept, but in reality I could not reset some of the keys to do what I wanted. After wasting hours playing around with it, I just gave up and kept the TV remote handy for specific functions that I couldn't get the Sony to accept.
