Hi there. I'm looking for a point in the right direction. My wife and I recently remodeled our basement and have included a nice home theater section. We're interested in putting 3 circuits of incandescent remodeler cans on remote control. I'd like two of them to be on dimmers and the 3rd which is just a single light at the foot of the stairs on an "on/off" remote control option. If it has to dim, that's fine. I need help in choosing which products to use. I don't want to use X10 if they're going to make me buy a seperate remote. I'm looking for something that I can just change out and then use my RM-AV3000 to turn on and off and dim.

I've tried looking through this forum and even searching, but didn't get too far and don't want to reinvent the wheel. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can someone please tell me exactly what I need?

Oh yeah, one ciruct is (4) 75-watt bulbs and the other one is (6) 75-watt bulbs.

thanks in advance

I would suggest Lightolier Compose switches and room controller. In addition to X10, they can also be controlled with your IR remote. The room keypad has a built in IR receiver.

you will not have to but a seperate remote if you use x10. you will need an IR543 to convert the IR from your remote to the signals that will control your x10 switches. your remote has the x10 codes built into it. however, this is the cheapest way to go (IMHO). If you spent a lot of money on your home theater, you might want something fancy like martin (post 2) suggests.

okay, i'm still a little confused. our basement is nice, but i'm not sure i'm up for spending the money, nor do i want to have to install a keypad. the x10 sounds like the way to go, but what all do i need? I need the switches and the ir543? is that all? i also forgot to mention a very important fact and that is that two of the switches are 3-way, they can be turned on and off by a couple switches on the other end of the basement. What do I need for those, can I leave them the same if I don't need to be able to dim them from that side of the room?

okay, i guess i was making this too complicated.

i just got off the phone with x10 and they explained to me what it is i need. what i'm still confused about though are all the different choices out there. for example if you look at smarthome.com, there are a ton of different wall switches that say they are x10 compatible.

can i go down to home depot and pick this stuff up? can someone tell me what to stay away from? also how do i verify that the switch will handle my (6) 75-watt cans? and lastly, if the switch itself does not have presets, can you achieve that with the rm-av3000 by programming it? thanks again for the feedback, i want to do this right the first time.

Let me clear this up real quick. I just went through the same thing. If you want to buy the stuff and be able to return it you can buy x10 equip at radio shack and mernards. The radio shack catalog has a bunch of things in it and descriptions to read. They make three way x10 switches for you to use in your basement. If you use your sony remote you will need to use the code 2005 on you lighting present, and need a ir543 to control your switches. The IR543 will recieve the IR from your sony remote and sent its signal through the walls wireing to your switches its that easy. You don't need any transponder modules or anything.
