I have a Home-N-Glo fireplace with an RF remote and a brandnew MX 700. I understand there is some kind of converter / setup that can possibly allow me to work the fireplace with MX 700. Can anyone help please ?

OK, here's what I figured out: I may as well go buy the IR 543 device which converts the IR from my MX 700 to X10 and then just hook up some kind of X10 switch to my fireplace, right ?

reprinted from one of my earlier posts:
i have done this and it works great! the switch for my gas fireplace is under a flap that opens below the glass. i noticed that the switch was just a contact closure. i figured out that this does not need power(ac) because when a storm caused a power outage, my fireplace remained on. i have an open space under my fireplace insert that contained the AC for the blower. I used the x10 UM506 universal module and set it for a contact closure when activated. i then tapped into the two wires going to the fireplace switch and hooked them up the the um506 which is plugged into the blower AC outlet under the fireplace insert. viola. works like a champ. now i don't have to fight the hellfire winds from the blower to turn off my fireplace. i was going to get another x10 switch to control my blower fan speed but that is for another day. hope this helps.

Thanks, I saw that post earlier. I am NOT good with the electronics, but my fireplace sounds darn well very similar to yours and I guess I would like to try. SO I should buy the IR543 and the UM506 and hook those up and I'll be cooking [ excuse the lame pun ] ?

Helgardt, if your fireplace is similar to mine, then the ir543 and um506 should work. my fireplace only had one way to turn on and that was by lowering the front panel and flipping a toggle switch. follow the wires from the back on the toggle switch and they'll probably go to some type of connector with screw terminals. connect each end of the terminals to the um506 and give it a try. i left my toggle switch in place but you can remove it and re-attach the wires to the um506. good luck. let us know if this worked. i love showing off my MX-500 universal remote and turning on my fireplace with it. :0)

Xantach makes an IR to dry contact device(CC-12)it responds to 4 IR commands: ON, OFF, Toggle and Momentary. It works very well with Fireplaces.

We stock the CC12 but have never tried it in this application, sounds like a good idea if have a line of sight. The IR codes are available for the CC12 in the Pronto library so you should be able to use them in your MX700 without a problem.

They are identical except for part number and the 50% greater price. I guess calling it something else cost a lot.

What do you mean? The 4040 is only $29, and the only place I could find the IR 543, it was listed as $99. Did you mean that the 4040 was less?? Searched http://www.homeautomationnet.com/ and did not find any reference to either. Maybe I am not looking for the right thing.
