Helgardt, if your fireplace is similar to mine, then the ir543 and um506 should work. my fireplace only had one way to turn on and that was by lowering the front panel and flipping a toggle switch. follow the wires from the back on the toggle switch and they'll probably go to some type of connector with screw terminals. connect each end of the terminals to the um506 and give it a try. i left my toggle switch in place but you can remove it and re-attach the wires to the um506. good luck. let us know if this worked. i love showing off my MX-500 universal remote and turning on my fireplace with it. :0)
