Hey there everyone, I bought some stuff used, in perfect condition. Here is the list:

-Pioneer VSX-D509S A/V Receiver
-12 inch Miller/Kreisel VOLKSWOOFER Sub ??? Is this a decent unit?
-SONY TC-WR97ES Tape deck
-SONY DVP-S360 DVD player
-SONY SLV-640HF VCR
-SONY CDP-C87ES CD player
-tons of cables, optical, RCA, and S-Video etc..

Ok, so I got this all for 500US$, and I know that each piece brand new would total far more than that, but I am wondering if any of this stuff is still good? Has anyone had any experience with Miller/Kreisel? Is Pioneer good at all? I am a total audio illiterate and would appreciate some comments, I would also appreciate some advice for my upcoming speaker purchase, I only have the subwoofer, so I need to get a solid pair of fronts, or maybe a decent surround setup. Thanks!

Oh yeah forgot to mention, I upgraded from a TEAC PL-D2000 all in one DVD surround system. Please noone tell me that the TEAC is a better system.

Thanks

Happy, be happy. You got a good deal.

M & K makes several nice speaker systems that would complement your system:

They aren't as cheap as some brands, but with the money you saved, you'd have a damned nice system.

Happy,

M&K have been called "the masters of bass." I have not heard your particular model, but I'd bet it is awesome. -bruce

I am having a huge problem trying to hook my M&K Sub up to that Pioneer amp. If anyone has a clue, please offer some advice, I can get it to work, but the level is so low I can not really hear it at all. Even after adjusting the level on the back of the bass cabinet. If I switch speakers from AB to A or B I get a really loud bass feedback, I was afraid I blew it up , but all is ok. The left and right input RCA's on the back of the sub confuse me, as there is only on RCA out from my amp. Someone point me in a safe direction.

Matt we've always had good luck with M&K products, especially their subs. Like any sub, proper placement is key to achieving best response. We have good results with near flat responses on every sub we've installed. We also use proper test equipment to help reach the end result. (Real Time Analyzer)

Just for kicks, what line of subs have you had the most success with?

Happy, do this:

Disconnect any speaker wires from the sub, either in or out. Connect your main speakers to the "A" terminals, period. Run them with the speaker selector on "A" output, period.

It sounds like you had the mains on "A" and the sub on "B", and the sub's input crossover was causing oscillations. There should be nothing connected to the "B" terminals at all.

The fact that the sub has RCA inputs means it it a powered sub, so plug it in. If it has an input level control, set it at a low level, about 9 o'clock (assuming the usual 7-to-5 range).

Get an RCA "Y" cable, one that has two female jacks to one male plug. If you have a stereo cable to reach from the receiver to the sub, plug the "Y" cable into the receiver 'sub out', and run the cable from the "Y" to the sub inputs. If you have a mono cable, use the "Y" at the sub end to connect the cable to the sub's inputs.

Start with the volume low, including the sub output level if there is one. Use the DD decoding. Play a DVD with a decent sound track. If you don't have a good start at this point, let us know.

To expand on Larry's comment: When he said to "plug it in," he didn't specify precisely where. As he mentioned, it should not be attached to the "B" speaker outputs (if that is in fact where you had it attached before).

At the risk of getting too basic here, look for a dedicated RCA ouput socket on the back of your receiver that is identified for the subwoofer. It might also be identified as "LFE." Hope I didn't bore you. -Bruce

Actually, when I said "plug it in", I was referring to the sub's power cord. I mentioned the sub's input connection(s) in the next paragraph.

I did, however, make a mistake that slipped by. If a mono cable is used between the receiver and the sub, the "Y" cord should have one female connector and two male connectors.

Had trouble with the RCA jack stuff, so I managed to use plain wire from the A speaker outputs to the sub, then through to the speakers themselves, it managed to work, but I am still wanting to use the RCA jacks. I guess I want to figure them out just because I have not yet figured them out... It works, but I am sure you all know how I feel. Thanks for help, if anyone can make a decent diagram email it dont_like_my_attitude@yahoo.com , thanks again.
