I think I pretty much understand how a Dolby Digital receiver handles bass and LFE now. My system has a weak sub and floor speakers with 12" woofers. I have my mains set to large and all others set to small. This weekend I am going to help my brother-in-law enter the age of digital by introducing a Sony DVD player and a DD Onkyo amp. He has some serious main speakers. They are Klipsch with 2 10" woofers and a horn. He also has a good Klipsch center and surrounds. His sub is a Paradigm 10". What should I set his mains to? Large or Small? Even though the Paradigm is a good sub, I wonder if I would be better off setting his mains to Large also? I obviously will have to see which sounds better, but on paper, knowing about the hardware I have to work with, what would be the best setting?

Hey Think
Depends on the Paradigm sub. Which one is it? I have the PS1000 and it handles down to around 25Hz and is very capable, most likely better performance than what the Klipsch can do. Either way I would test the setup both ways and see which gets better bass performance...let us know how it works out....Tony

Think, to restate: I recommend setting any speaker that can handle full-range bass be set to 'large', ESPECIALLY if you have the sub out cut off. Don't forget to adjust the sub's phase control so the multiple bass signals complement, instead of cancelling each other. The ears have the final say.
