Many manufacturers include a Cinema EQ mode on their receivers. Mine is a Kenwood. On another thread I read where it is used to compensate for small main speakers. I have also read where it is for small theater rooms. I have also read where it is used to eliminate the harsh "highs and lows" of the movie theater." Does anyone have additional knowledge on Cinema Eq? Does anyone use it? It sounds good, but I can't get my Avia calibration disc to work properly when I am using it.

I believe it goes something like this...The center channel is originally mixed a little bright because in a movie theater, the center channel speakers are behind the screen and would otherwise sound muddy. When they transfer the film's soundtrack to DVD, I guess the studio doesn't bother to knock off that "edge". Cinema EQ, RE-EQ are a way for your receiver to do this for you. I don't believe it has anything to do with speaker or room size.

I may be wrong (goodness knows it wouldn't be the first time) but I've gotten the impression that the term "Cinema EQ" is not a standard.

It appears to be used by some manufacturers -- Sherwood, Yamaha and Kenwood (Denon?) come to mind -- to indicate circuity they've incorporated to help translate big-screen sound into a small listening room. It also appears that each manufacturer has a different approach to this task, and that they have different ideas about how to explain it to the buyer.

So I don't think it unusual that you found so many different explanations... The best I saw was a review of a Yamaha receiver who called it "pseudo THX Re-EQ." Key word being "pseudo," of course. Each company chose its own approach...
