Just released today GM sold Hughes to Echostar! see below
Oct. 29 — General Motors Corp. struck a deal to sell its Hughes Electronics Corp. subsidiary to EchoStar Communications Corp. for $25.8 billion in stock and cash, capping a weekend of brinkmanship that saw early favorite News Corp. walk away in a huff and EchoStar’s own bid falter momentarily on financing concerns.

Yes, there is a full story on techtv.com

They'll have a 17% share of the market for TV subscribers IF the federal regulators let the deal go through.

So if this deal goes through who will have to get different receiving equipment, DirecTV or Dish customers?

It's too early to tell for sure, but according to the press releases and info that has come out, it's likely that both types of receivers would be replaced by a whole new generation of boxes.

Of course, this deal isn't even expected to close until the second half of next year, and it would probably take a year or more after that for equipment changes to even start to take place. Of course, all that assumes that this deal gets past the SEC regulators (which it should IMHO).

It would stand to reason (but, then, who says reason always wins?) that ownership of one company by another doen't mean that the equipment has to change. Imagine the lawsuits that would follow if thousands of people were told that their perfectly good receivers should be thrown away. I know I would file. I have 3 new DSR's that I don't want to have rendered obsolete because of a buyout.

They talk about more efficient use of the satellites, so something has to change in the long run.

In the deal prospectus, there are many, many dollars (can't remember the amount) for replacing customers equipment. So, if/when it becomes time to change equipment, most likely it will be at little or no cost to the end user.

All is speculation at this point. The merger is not scheduled to be finalized til late 2002, and all pends on regulatory approval, which is far from certain. Until then both entities must continue to do business as independent companies.

For rampant speculation on the possibilites, some of it from very knowledgeable individuals (and some of it, well, you know ...), head on over to www.dbsforums.com
