recently added (2) new cable boxes (now for total of 3) to home...purchased (2) sets of rf-link 5.8 ghz wireless transmitter/receiver pairs so that i didn't have to run cables thru house...video and audio are great...problem is with IR remote control...these rf-link pairs convert IR to UHF (i think)...have no problem with receiving IR signal at cable box, but either of the remotes causes both cable boxes to change channels...rf-link sets have 4 channel capacity...have tried one of the rf-link pairs on channel 1 and the other on channel 4, but still have crosstalk...would like for cable boxes to be controlled independently of each other....have contacted cable company and they say that they can't help...was wondering if cable boxes and remotes can be reprogrammed with different codes...any suggestions?

I don't think this is anything to do with crosstalk - the two rf-links do need to be on different channels but this won't solve all the problems. I believe these devices convert from IR to RF and then back to IR, so if having them on separate channels does not solve the problem I guess both receivers are in the same location and both are responding to the same IR code. There are two ways of solving this: first (as you have identified) is to put the two boxes on different codes Most (many) cable and sat receivers have this capability. It's usually mentioned in the user manual, although sometimes buried in the text. If not, and your cable company can't help, I suggest you contact Motorola. The second way is to shield one cable box from the IR of the other.

i haven't, as of yet, contacted Motorola...however, i have separated the cable boxes by about 3 feet...and have tried shielding the IR sensors...with foil and with books (haha)...any suggestions on a proper way of shielding?...thanks for the response...

It is easy to not realize, as a new poster, that there can be many different models of a particular item, even of a particular brand of particular item, so the model number is not given.

But since you did not mention the actual model number, it is really impossible to be sure any answer we give you is accurate. A bit of googling gives one possibility, although probably the wrong one (what IS that model number, anyway?), being the
AVS-5811. Its manual can be found at [Link: smarthome.com], but that manual mentions nothing about channels.

Please give us the model number.

Different channels should allow you to run the video to different locations, and keep it separate, along with the IR signals. I don't understand the problem. Uh, what was that model number again?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

you are right...the model # is AVS-5811...and as you suggested there is nothing in the manual about the channels...there are however 4 selectable channels on each wireless transmitter and receiver...i have tried operating one pair on channel 1 and the other pair on channel 4...still have the problem with crosstalk between remotes...the video and audio are great...have had one suggestion to try taping the IR mouse (that comes with the package and plugs in the wireless transmitter) with electrical tape and putting a small hole in it...any other suggestions would be appreciated...

The channels need to be separate (channel 1 and 4 are fine) or the RF signals will interfere with each other - but it does not solve the IR problem. The IR codes generated by the IR retransmitter at the receivers are identical. First port of call should be to Motorola......

I just read Ernie's last post. The issue here isn't the model number of the RF link, it is the model number of the Motorola cable box. It's the user manual of that which should contain info about setting remote codes for multiple receivers....so if you can give us the model number of the cable box maybe we can help..

isn't the model number of the RF link, it is the
model number of the Motorola cable box.

Granted, you need the Motorola model number. I have never had to deal with changing remote codes on them, and was unaware that you could do so.

But that doesn't mean you don't need the RF link's model number! Until you have that model number, you can't tell if you even need to get involved with the Motorola cable box! What if there are four separate channels for the RF link, but the Motorola boxes can't use differing IR code sets? Only having the model numbers of everything will tell us.

My point was, please tell us what the stuff is so we can do someting other than wave our arms around, real impressive-like.
