maybe i am dumb, but........
i am semi-comfortable with computers, programming, and electronics.
i spent the better part of this morning programming my harmony, doing the worksheets, and generally customizing the remote.
however.......
after all this time, i can get the harmony to control all of the devices simply (i.e., on/off, volume, channels) but can not seem to get the pip to work, the meu options, or other options and standard buttons that come on my tv and cable box remote.
i thought from my reading of these forums that the setup and control was going to be a bit easier and that the remote would not only be intuitive, but make using my devices easier. i must be missing the big picture because the more i play with the remote, the more time consuming and more difficult it appears to be.
am i an idiot?? (theat is rhetorical, no response required.)
any help or assitance in seeing the light would be most appreciated.

sh: I am having the same trouble. I can't get menus on my TV to work properly whether via the LCD or via the buttons.

A few other things are missing.

It gets better with each time I update (every 4 or 5 days) but it is still far from where it should be.

One simple example: When I press channel up for my Cable Box, it sends out the next channel using numbers, not the "next channel" ir code.

I have yet to send that last one to the beta testers.

Does anyone have their Harmony remote to where they want it to be, disgregarding the TV channel list?

I don't have mine very close to where I want it. I still want to add PIP controls, TV and VCR menu controls, and I want to clean up the Harmony's menu system.

I'd be further along, if my wife would let me have it for 5 minutes. I think she likes it... :)

It was explained to me by Easy Company some time ago that the actual channel numbers are used, rather than the Up/Down, due to ensure that errors are avoided. Can't remember why that is, though.... ... Mike

Any pointers on how to clean up Harmony's menus? I don't see references to them in the xml anywhere. Specifically, I want to add/change/delete some of the menu items for my satellite, but don't see how to do that when I look at the xml for the satellite or the 'Watch TV' Activity.

Actually using the channel numbers instead of channel up and channel down is so that it coincides with your "selected channels" (hidden, favorites, etc.) If you used channel up, you could end up on a channel you have hidden or not included in your favorites list. Depending on which activity you have selected.
At least that's the way I understand it.

Bill

But they are touting their "Smart State Technology"?

How smart is having to wait for 3 IR commands to be sent slowly enough so that the TV/Cable Box understands it, instead of one IR code?

If you are channel surfing, it takes FOREVER!!!

I can't see how it has anything to do with the Favorite Channels, etc. since they DO send out specific IR codes, and the remote would know that it was actually changing the TV or Cable Box or DSS to exactly that channel.

I still don't understand why.

I would like to set up a toggle switch to select the various sound modes on my receiver, ie, Dolby, stadium, stereo, etc. I have a choice of about 7 different one. I understand this probable is a sub-menu, but I am not excited about rewriting xml on my own. Are there any more specific instructions out there which are more descriptive then Harmony's? Thanks in advance.

Hey Bill,

Mine doesn't act like that. If I'm in the "Favorites" menu and press CH+ or CH-, it steps through the "All" list of channels.

How 'bout you?

Nick,
Haven't tried it from favorites, but will tonight and let you know. The info I listed earlier actually came from Beta when I asked a question that I didn't need to ask about how slow channel surfing was. There is a answer covering it on the bottom of the web page that I didn't see. Guess my pointy little head is showing again!

Information Leak:

In yet another improvement to the OS for the Harmony, if you add the following XML Code to your "Watch Television" capability under "Change My Activities... ", you will be rewarded with a new screen-scrolling feature. This sets the Harmony to jump full pages in either your Listings, Favorites, or Channels display. This feature has already saved me hours of scrolling. EasyZapper is hoping that this will relieve some of the stress amongst those who find that too much scrolling drives them mental...

In your "Watch Television" activity, edit the XML and paste these options in (right after the tag, as shown below. You should get "Smart Channel Changing", and "Menu Paging" for your channel and show lists:

Can someone tell me how to post HTML/XML code here, without having it show up as active? As soon I can figure this out, I'll pop the code in right here.

Another benefit: The "Smart Channel Changing" [ code example here] causes the remote to use "Up/Down" channel changing, rather than send out a three-digit command each time, when you are simply channel surfing. Another much-requested feature.

NOTE: Since this is "beta" code, and has not been fully tested, ensure that you back up your original code first. Note also that I have been using it and have not encountered any problems at all. -HH-

Yet another cool "Leak":

EasyZapper has set up a link that allows you to actually "see" what your Devices' InfraRed code looks like. In their words:

"You can choose to digitize a command, or manually copy in other commands (including pronto hex codes). Once you have a command, you can visualize it (check out the SVG version!), or export it to a pronto hex command."

Cool or what. Note that this probably won't work until the next version of the client software is released, which should be any day now. When that happens, try it out here (or do some Beta testing, right now, if you prefer):

I've found a way to change the default "Power On" settings. The Harmony is set to always start up your "Watch TV" Activity, but this can be changed to any other activity, in the XML code.

Mike,
Have you figured out a way to map personal digitized codes to hard keys? When I change to my satellite (TV) activity, I would like to use the keypad for the guide. Right now, if I push the transport keys, I get some action, but not what you would expect. I'm sure there is a way through the xml, but not sure what it is. Not really familiar with xml. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Bill
