I am trying to get a discrete power code for an Onkyo reciever. I have searched the files and got the dreaded "does not exist". Can one of the .irp files in Make Hex be used to give me some try codes for the Onkyo? Thanks to johnsfine for Make Hex! TKS GT

I have no clue whether those exist.

Use NEC1.irp

Onkyo mixes NEC1 and NEC2 codes, but you would have no need to search NEC2 because:
1) The only difference between NEC1 and NEC2 is the way extended duration is represented. The initial command is the same.
2) Discretes, if they exist at all, would certainly use NEC1.

Onkyo receivers mix device numbers 210.108 and 210.109, so you'd need to search two full sets of 256 commands and probably search them at least twice each (looking for discrete On vs. discrete Off). That's a lot of effort (and maybe some risk) all toward finding something that more likely doesn't even exist.

Thanks for the replies! Johnsfine, I am concerned that you mentioned risk in trying the codes from MakeHex. Is this a risk to the equipment or just my sanity? I think I will live with a query screen to make sure the amp power state is correct. Thanks again for the help GT

A few manufacturers of some devices have included IR commands (not on the original remote) that do horrible things, such as erasing the firmware that the device needs for normal operation. It isn't common. I don't recall any stories about Onkyo ever doing that (though my memory should never be trusted). I don't even recall any stories about such problems with any brand of receiver. Most such stories are about TV's. But it is still a risk that you should evaluate for yourself.

What about the signals Peter suggested?

Onkyo is pretty consistent in IR signals across models. Once someone has identified useful commands in one model, those are both safer and easier to test in your own model than trying the whole set of 512.

Within the same brand, I've never heard of a command being a useful discrete in one model and destructive in another. That would really be an insane thing for the manufacturer to do, since multiple models tend to be present together in the higher end stores where discrete signals are likely to be used to manage them.

Across brandss, the worst I've heard of is a TV whose self destruct command matched the PIP command of TV's of other more common brands.

The commands are in the files under On and standbye as stated above. Have used over and again with Onkyo and Integra
