PRONTOEDIT.COM is announced as a source for people with Prontos to trade configuration files, ideas, icons etc. Further, the site will have search engines to find specific mfr codes based upon product type and/or model number.
The site is currently active although not fully operational as ProntoEdit software has not yet released.
Per CES informative update, the software will release via website in JANUARY,1999. The exact date is still uncertain.

Prontoedit.com looks like it will be a nice site for pronto owners but I think Jack should have made it a little more clear that Prontoedit.com is a service of Metronet Safe & Sound and that Metronet is not really a sponsor. In other words, the domain Prontoedit.com is registered to his company, Metronet Safe & Sound.

...And that domain is mostly so that Jack can be charging List when others are charging $299. Thanks for helping folks out but hey-lets face it it is not purely an altruistic gesture.

I understand business, supply and demand and the psychology of greed. Therefore I'll just wait until the other vendors get their stock.

On the home page it states the the sponsor is Metronet Safe and Sound. I don't see how it could be any clearer than that. By the way, who is selling Pronto's for $299.00. I know several people who would love to get it at that price.

Nobody has to buy the Pronto from Jack.
Nobody has to use the site.
Anybody can use the site.

I thought the site was pretty nicely done.

I think what it shows is that Jack & Metronet have a strong commitment to the Pronto. Since it is effectively a form of advertising, revenue can be streamed to keep it fast, up-to-date, etc. There's nothing wrong with that. On the other hand, user-sites often don't have the time or the money to keep something the way they'd really like.

For instance, I know the site here is slow. Even though it's on a T3, speed is strangely lacking during the day. Visit here at about 12:45am (according to RC's clock) to see what I mean. Since I can't afford a dedicated T3 I'm looking at alternate hosting - a real challenge, for sure!

Geeeez!

All that time I spent reading Jack's helpful and informative posts, and now you tell me he *sells*Prontos? What is this world coming to?

And since "a helpful person" was involved in the design of the Pronto (and therefore, has a vested interet in its success), I don't think I'll pay any attention to his posts either.

You guys are too much. I, for one, appreciate Jack's service and dedication. His self-promotion is minimal, tasteful, and acceptable. If he wants to charge list, fine. You don't have to buy it from him.

Hi,
Just a couple of comments...

1. Does anyone know of a company that provides something for nothing? Jack doens't have to provide his service "free to all Pronto Users." How much would we have to pay someone else for the clearinghouse-type service that ProntoEdit will provide? I think ProntoEdit.com will be a valuable resource for all. Thanks Jack.

2. Daniel has also done an excellent job of running this forum and we are all much more knowledgable about Pronto because of it. Thanks Daniel.

These whiners really get my goat. I have been a Hi-Fi enthusiast for over ten years now, buying my first amplifier (A Musical Fidelity A1) at the age of 21 from a small independent dealer just around the corner from my parents house. I have been through several upgrades over the years and now have a system worth about $25,000. I have always been back to the same dealer, even though they are more expensive than others. (Except for the Pronto, which you can't get in the UK, so it came from Jack) Why? Because I am paying them for all the time that they have bothered to spend with me. You often see posts on the usenet: "Audition it at a specialist dealer, then buy it on the net" Specialist dealers have to charge a premium to pay the knowledgeable staff they employ, If eveyone tried to get their advice for nothing, then what would happen to the specialist dealer?

Jack is obviously a Pronto enthusiast. He has devoted a great deal of time to this forum, and to setting up the web-site. Why shouldn't he try to cover his costs by selling a few extra Prontos over the net? He could quite easily password protect the site for his customers only, but then that would just give you something else to moan about wouldn't it?

Tim.

That happens if people get spoiled and decadent. Here we have a great forum with tons of insider information, which, in turn, helped me to make up my mind about purchasing a capable remote and avoiding the waste of time and money of finding out everything on myself.
But some people act tactless enough to blame Jack that he is "selling" Prontos.
So what?
There are a ton of other dealers who sell Prontos as well.......did they give us any helpfull information on our questions?
Or maybe Jack should be selling Prontos AND charging us for his insider information. Would that fit you better?
I did not buy the Pronto from him, (I did not realize that he is a dealer at that time) but I can regardless use all his help on this forum.
To me, that is a wonderfull service he provides here and to order at least the charging base from him will give me the opportunity to thank him for that. If somebody feels he want to save 14.95 and buy it somewhere else, that is fine.....
Some people appreciate service and a helpful mind, and some don't.....

I Don't Understand..........

I started this thread to provide web space for downloads.........

Look what you have turned it into.......

This looks more like a group of kids fighting over a candy bar.....

With all of the MAC #%&!, Pricing #%&!

I also have spent more dollars then I have cents on equipment and home automation.

If this is the way you treat help I for one will pray for the dealer you use.

A note to Jack

Thank you for all the input, support and information you have provided to this group.

Thank you for seting up prontoedit.com and paying the bill for it, as an internet site provider I know the costs you have to put out for this.

George, I doubt people are upset over your offer to provide server space but rather the comments by Tom Ambrosia and Cheapskate concerning Jack's supposed "ulterior motives". At todays costs, any offer of server space is most generous.
