It will only run on what it thinks is the first available free COM port. Usually that is COM 1. If I put something else in COM 1 on my PC, I find I can run OK on COM 4.

Ok, I seem to get proper communication in COM1 & COM2, but I get the "COM1 open but no responde from RAV-2000" message.

I'm using the multicitated Belkin usb/serial adapter... This means I must get a different one? anybody here has manage to use the Belkin succesfully???

I'm using WinXP and latest Belkin driver.

Why don't the remote manufacturers stop being so cheap and just upgrade to USB like the rest of the world. This would make things alot easier!!!!

Strange comment? Philips has upgraded to USB in their latest models.

You are complaining that something that came out three years (or more) used USB? The reason, back then serial was still bigger then USB. The new version that come out one year ago uses USB

Works on XP as well with slight variation in procedure.

This worked for me with 3 different usb-serial adapters that I couldn't get to work on 3 different laptops with 3 different operating systems.

Go to Start, Programs, Control Panel, System, Device Manager and select the usb port with the usb to serial adapter.

Click on the Port Settings tab. Click on the Resources tab.

Uncheck the box that says Use automatic settings.

Select Input/Output range. Click on Change Settings.

6) Type 03F8-03FF in the Value box. This value will change the port to COM 1. The values for each port are:

COM 1: 03F8-03FF

COM 2: 02F8-02FF

COM 3: 03E8-03EF

COM 4: 02E8-02EF

After entering the value, click OK. Click OK again and click Yes when the "Creating a Forced Configuration" window appears. Click OK again.

Restart your computer. If you go into the device manager, you will see that the COM port has changed to the one you have selected.

The problem seems to have something to do with ProntoEdit software having to work on com1. Tonto software is more forgiving with usb to serial adapters. It seems to work on any available com port.

Thanks Michael, with your instructions I was able to change my Belkin F5U409 Adapter from Com4 to Com1. I have Windows XP. For anyone having the same problem.

Start: Settings: Control Panel: System.
Click on the Hardware Tab:
Device Manager Button:
Ports button:
Open Properties on the Belkin Adapter:
Click on the Port Setting Tap:
Click on the Advanced Button:
You will find a button with alot of Com Numbers.

Hopefully, I can answer some of the redundant questions and frustrations posted above. First, there is no way to tell Touch Screen Setup or Pronto Edit to use a different COM port. It will automatically scan the two physical ports (COM1 and COM2) for the device. PE and TSS WILL NOT work on the virtual COM ports 3 and 4. Tonto will so if you are hell bent on using COM3 or COM4, use Tonto.

My experience with the Belkin USB to serial adapter was that it just did not work. I have a background in network engineering and can say I tried everything. Only thing I can figure is the drivers on that just don't play nice with the remotes. I did not try it with Tonto so, to the one gentleman who claimed the Belkin worked - are you using Tonto?

The Tripp-lite works great and, is simple to set to COM1 - just like any other serial port in your device manager. (This is available at www.cdw.com - part number is U209-000-R.) You are not limited to some "wizard" that will not let you change serial ports as I have heard of in other devices. Also, the Radio Shack generic USB to serial adapter works great and is probably more convenient to obtain.

Finally, with regard to XP desktops... XP Pro works fine - you can disregard the disclaimers that XP is not supported. However, if you are running XP Home, there IS a problem with TSS and PE. You can download to the remote, but cannot upload from it. The above mentioned USB to serial adapters work fine. Simply disable your existing COM1 port, plug in the USB to serial adapter, assign it to COM1. You'll probably get an error message that the port is already in use - ignore it and force it to COM1 anyway - you'll be fine.

Not quite true. I have no trouble using COM4. My understanding is that it will only work with the first port that ProntoEdit thinks is "free" from COM1 to COM4.

That has been my experience... hence asking what program he's using. If he is using Tonto, than I have never disputed that - only with PE and TSS.

It's ProntoEdit. I sometimes have something else on COM1 and can plug the Pronto into COM4 OK. COM2/3 is used by the modem (don't ask why it is taking two slots).

Does anybody have any experience using an adapter for a Pronto 2000 under Mac OS X and Tonto? I'd like to try this out, but don't want to spend the money on an adapter if it's already been determined not to work.
