Harmony Customer Support,

I am considering the purchase of a Harmony remote to sit side by side with my MX-500. The Harmony is the perfect remote for my wife! :)

However, I am a Macintosh fanatic and I'm unsure how quickly Mac users will see support. In the meantime, I'm reasonably confident that my Virtual PC setup (Windows 98) will work fine with the Harmony. So... a couple of questions:

1) If I set up my Harmony via Virtual PC (Windows 98) and when native Mac support finally arrives for Harmony, will I have to start all over again or will it be an easy matter to "transfer" my Harmony set up to the Mac side? Is my Harmony's set up stored on the Harmony web page or is it stored on my computer?

2) If, for some reason, Harmony does NOT work with Virtual PC, can I get a full refund?

3) Are you interested in giving me a "discount" to beta test Virtual PC compatibility for you? :)

Thank you,

Mark

Mark, I suggest you pose this question directly to Harmony. While they may read this thread and forum, they don't host it. By the way, I'm a Macster, too, but use VPC3 w/W95, so I can't run it anyway. However, please let us know what you find out.

Hi Larry, do you know of anyone who has successfully used the EZ with VPC. I bought one and can't get Win98SE on VPC to recognize it.
Thanks for any advice.

Aha! The same question you emailed me. Let me cut'n'paste from my response to you:

No, "Soup", I don't. I'm running Windows 95 C in VPC 3.0. I couldn't get any downloads to work properly. I use my fiance's PC which works like it should. Ask the same question in the Harmony forum.

Don't know how that happened Larry. :-p

Probably just not enough sleep and/or too much of dealing with Win98 in Virtual PC. :-D

I just finished setting up my Harmony on a Mac running OS X and VPC with Win2000. It worked like a charm. The second I plugged the USB cable into my keyboard, Win2000 recognized the remote and I was off and running.

That's great! I haven't been able to get Win98 and VPC 5.02 to work. The plug and play doesn't work. Thanks for the info. Now if I can just find my Win2000 disk....

Okay, I tried VPC 5 with OS X and Win2000 and Windows still doesn't "see" the Zapper. VPC sees it because I can see it in the USB preferences, but it doesn't cause Windows to do anything. Curious.

If anyone knows what I'm doing wrong, I'd appreciate it. My zapper doesn't respond well to Win98 on a PC well either...I have to remove my batteries every time but at least it responds, but the battery removal doesn't work with VPC.

Strange. Have you downloaded any service packs available for Win2000? They often provide more compatibility with various hardware and software.

Have you tried different USB ports on your Mac? The first time I plugged my Harmony into my Mac keyboard (after I had installed harmony Monitor), Windows announced it had detected new hardware, and after some confusing dialog boxes, Harmony Monitor kicked in, and I was off and running.

Thanks for your suggestions! I D/L'ed the service packs and still nothing. I've tried every USB on my machine too. I have the VPC OS pack of Win2000, not from my Win2000 disk, don't know if that makes a difference. I'm beginning to think I got a dud, although it works on a borrowed PC somewhat. :(

UPDATE: Okay I got VPC to recognize my harmony! The trick was to have OS X 10.1.3 installed. I had it on my iBook but not the G4 I use VPC with. I tried to update the Harmony and it works, now it just doesn't verify properly! I'm getting closer!

Thanks again!

Great! I have OS X 10.1.3 and never thought to mention that fact. Sorry. I also had trouble with verifying. I found that I simply had to try and try again until it verified correctly. It usually took me 3-5 attempts. Not fun, but now that I have my Harmony configured the way I want, it doesn't matter. I don't download daily TV listings -- I prefer to simply look at the TIVO online TV guide. If I had to dl the listing every day, I would get really frustrated.
