Anyone have any direct input on the build quality/ use of a TC30 vs a 550?
I've read all the posts and looked for a TC30 locally to no avail. I purchased a 520 as a "trial" and although am convinced the SW can be beaten into submission, the build quality & ergonomics is just terrible.
I just played w/ a 550 and it is surprisingly, much better than the 520, probably because of the rubber back vs. the hard plastic and better color contrast for buttons up front. It doesn't creak when I grip it! A color display is not a priority for me nor is a docking remote (I'll use rechargables). I'm not likely to need to control more devices than the 550 can either.
Is the build of the TC30 worth the difference in the cost ($75) plus the issues of hacking from the HK to Harmony site and potentially incompatible software? Are the buttons truly better spaced or is this an optical illusion due to different colors used?

Usually, HK build quality is very good and I'd be willing to pay but if it's a relabeled 520 chassis w/ a color screen and 880 guts, it's tough to see the value over a 550.

Comments/ opinions? Wish I could see a TC30 before ordering on-line.

Thanks.....

Can't say anything about build quality, but one important difference is, that TC30 has 8 lcd-buttons, where 520 and 550 have only 4. Because of this I would replace my 525 with TC30, if the price difference were just $75. Our prices: harmony 525 - 54 EURO; TC30 - 259 EURO.

I have the TC30, cost a little over $100. See my thoughts here ...can't comment on a Harmony, haven't touched one.

Thanks Beckp,
I'd reviewed your post & others I'd found from TC30 only owners but none gave a true assessment of build & ergonomics that are so poor on the 520. Some general reviews say TC30 buttons (esp numeric) are better spaced than 520/550 but from the pics they look identical. Also the height of the channel & Vol controls are poor on 520/550 so hopefully this is better too. These issues and the "creaking" (cheap) of the 520 is why it's a short timer.
If the HK isn't better in these areas, the 550 addresses the worst of the issues and I don't need color or 8 LCD buttons.

scotty63 -- I think you nailed it. I bought the TC30 for its looks, recharging cradle, and functionality. It is solid and quiet. The ergonomics are not well addressed. Buttons are small and close together (but then I liked the look). Once I got over the learning curve -- take my time and hit buttons carefully and sufficiently forcefully -- all's fine. My guess is you'll be satisfied with the 550.
