Although it's a little more than $300, I would highly recommend the Toshiba SD-3109. It sells retail in the stores (like Best Buy) for $399 but www.suttertel.com has it for $339 with free UPS ground shipping. I've purchased from them before and would recommend them to anyone. If you get the Toshiba SD-3109 DVD player from www.800.com, they have it for $399.95 but you also get $75 worth of free movies from www.800.com as well as the promotional that Toshiba is doing with 5 free movies. It's the equivalent of paying $325 for the player, paying $75 dollars for some flix get an additional 5 movies for free and get free 3-day UPS shipping included free.

I posted this message quite awhile ago, but I still love my DVD player. It's a mid-to-low end player, but it's great!

I purchased the Panasonic A120 a few months ago and I have been very, very satisfied with it. I haven't encountered any technical glitches (pixelation, skipping, etc) so far, and it's very easy to use.

I purchased it for $349, but most places sell it for $299 now. Places like Best Buy and Circuit City have a free DVD offer (5 movies, but the titles are pre-selected).

The player does not have a built-in AC-3 decoder though. For that you have to step up to the A320 (+$100 or so).

Video outputs: RCA, S-Video, Composite Video
Audio outputs: RCA, Optical

Here are two links to professional reviews.

Good luck on your search.

I'd have to concur on the A120. I'm very happy with mine.

I'm looking for a DVD player myself for Christmas. I have been reading good things about the PROSCAN DVD player - I forget which model it is. I've also heard good news about the Toshiba and Panasonic models above. Has anyone bought the PROSCAN?

Sorry but the proscan is a no go. Especially since the collapse of divx youre paying more for a feature you can no longer use.

toshiba, panasonic, SONY, all good choices.

I have been interested in a great DVD player too.
Have been hearing alot about the Panasonic A120.
What will I be missing w/o the AC-3 decoder. Is it better to have DTS & AC-3 built in? Is it true
that you can't tape off of DVD?
Thanks in advance.

Give the ProScan a try. I have heard great reviews of it. Circuit City now has a great price on the leftover DIVX model, around $259. Even though it is a DIVX model, it can be used exactly like a non DIVX model. For a highend brandname like ProScan, you won't be able to touch that price.

I recently bought a pioneer DV-414 , and love it! If you buy this model, make sure that it's a rencelt production run. earlier models had a really bad lip-sync problem. I have had no problems with this model and Sound and Vision Magazine (Stereo review) wrote a great review on it as well.

Check-out: [Link: computability.com]
They have it on their clearance page for $239.99+$5.95 shipping and 5 free DVDs - a much better deal than I got.

If you want to read the review, check-out Sound and Vision online (easier to reach if you have AOL)

I highly recommend the Panasonic A-120. I owned the Panasonic A-300U and loved it but I was looking for something with component video out and since my reciever has DD and DTS decoding I didn't need a decoder in my DVD player. Jim, just so you know if your reciever doesn't have 5.1 audio input it won't matter if your player has a decoder because your reciever won't support it. My suggestion you pickup an A-120 now (I just saw it for $265 at Video Only) then down the line when you can front the money for a nice reciever pickup one with a DTS & DD decoder. Just my two cents but I really feel the easiest way to get your own home theater is just to work your way up, and my first Panasonic DVD player is what convinced me this whole home theater thing was worth the money.

Also, if anyone is looking for a great DVD player with a DD decoder, I am selling my Panasonic A-300U - it works great but I just didn't need the decoder and since it's last year's model it doesn't have component video out, but if your TV doesn't have component video in that won't matter anyway. I was probably going to sell it for $300 OBO. Any questions e-mail me ben_wormald@hotmail.com
