Has anyone else notice that studio's make two Version of some DVD's. I know they make Collector Edition's. But what is this stuff Walmart is selling?
Take Gladiator and or Shrek. Both are available with DTS sound tracks. But if you buy these disk from Walmart you get the Cheap version. No DTS NO Second disk. You get it..
Just Griping I guess

Oh well if anyone else Notice let me know.

I never shop at Wallmart. It's far too difficult to steal DVDs there, with all the cameras and security.

I have seen the bargain basement DVDs though. From time to time I accidentally rent a "Full Screen" version. Why would they call it full screen when it leaves bars on the left and right of my display? It should be called "Antique Screen."

They don't make DVDs specific for Walmart. The one-disc version of Gladiator, Shrek, and many other movies are chopped down versions they started selling last year. I thought it was the exact same disc as the movie disc in the 2-disc original sets, but perhaps not if they took out the DTS.

You can still buy the 2-disc version. Maybe not at Walmart, but there are other places. Walmart has always been a cheap place, but their WS editions sell out instantly and then they have FS sitting on the shelf. Or they won't sell the good editions. It's really not the best place to buy DVDs.

Anyway, it is the studios, not the retailers that decided it would be a good idea to do this. This industry is bizarre. It used to be you'd get a crappy version right away, with an SE or CE later. Then you have these discs where the good edition comes first and they slice it down to cheap later. The only DVD release that has really been done well for all types of consumers is Lord of the Rings.

I get that part and was only using Walmart as an example... (Walmart, K Mart, Circit city, Ect...) I don't buy from these Stores. But after installing a system worth $10,000 and up for my customer's and coming over to see them using this low version disk. Well now you might see my Gripe. I now take both disk to my customer and try to explain to them. But it doesn't always work.
Again I'm just griping. but thanks for your reply

There are so many versions of DVDs it makes sense to do some research before buying anything. With the net, this can take about a minute. Here's my favorite forum for learning about problems, new releases, which version to buy, etc. And a great store, although not the cheapest, they usually have everything you could want and accurate specs.

Thanks Spiky, I'll check them out too!

Last night my sacd told me to look at my DVD Audio and when it didn't work, I engaged my DTS-ES which said to check with DD5.1. I dug out my manual, and it said to switch to Dolby ProLogic II and when I tried all I got was Dolby Digital EX. Due to the confusion I rewired for 6 channel pass-through and now I hear nothing. After unplugging everything and resetting, I'm convinced that some of the pesky electrons have gotten themselves hopelessly latched up in a specific logic gate that I am never going to find, so I'm torching my house and placing my fate, and the fate of my family, in the hands of the Red Cross.

Donations please...

Junkie,

No fear, you need a wire cleaning. Unplug all your wires and wash them with some mild soap. You should have your clarity back in no time.

Uh, don't forget to let them dry thoroughly before re-installing.

Thanks Spiky!

I was able to trade my wire stretcher straight across for an automatic wire cleaner. Everything works great. I'm sure glad I didn't torch the house.

You guys are throwing your money away; get a 'wire customizer/refurbisher'. It makes cables custom-length, re-solders every connection, and plugs itself into your components. The deluxe model even rotates each plug according to a user-defined schedule to minimize corrosion-induced voltage losses.

The 'wire customizer/refurbisher' sounds great. Went to their web site and did you know the new model, due out in the fall, is fully automated? Yup, it will drive itself to the clients house, sell the system, get the contract signed, and then basically it bahaves like the current deluxe model.

Please check out my ad at eBay if you need a pre-owned, slightly used automatic wire cleaner.
