Hello All,

Here is my dilemma: I have an RXV-2095 receiver and I want to add a Philips DVDR80 recorder to my system. I cannot figure out how or where to plug this recorder into on my receiver so i can get 5.1 sound from my DVD Changer (which has its own decoder), DVD recorder, and DSS?

I thought I was going to simply place my changer where my 2nd vcr went but when I did that I only get analog stereo sound. If i hook up my dvd recorder to the tape digital input then I don't get a video picture.

I have 2 rear coaxial audio inputs (for CD and DVD); 4 optical audio inputs (CD, Tape, DVD, TV), and I'm supposed to have 2 optical audio outputs. I know one of the outputs is the tape but not sure what the other one is.

This is a link to an image of the back of my Receiver.

There has got to be other people that have a DVD player, DVD recorder, and DSS or Digital Satellite that got it all working correctly. The guys at best buy didn't have any idea how i could do it, aarrgg.
Thanks for any replies.

Are your digital inputs assignable? If they are that should solve your problem.

DVDto DVD
Sat to TV
DVD RECto VID two assign digital input.

Or DVD recorder digital output to CD digital in, video to TV
CD input to Tape or unused input.

CB1
why have a nice system if you cant operate it, program the remote the right way the FIRST time!

Thanks CB1,

After reading your post I began to look in my manual for something synonomous with "assignable" and i found something called "Back Ground Video" function. I can listen to say CD while watching the TV so I think your suggestion is what I wanted. LOL, the BGV information in my manual was all of 2 sentences but what powerful sentences they were. Now, I don't have to purchase any new equipment, this time hehe.

That's probably not what you're looking for - that's just a way to watch and listen to different sources at the same time (which may still do what you want, but...)

What CB1's talking about is the ability to take "Optical 3" and assign it to the receiver's "DVD 1" input. However, it sounds like the Yamaha already has all digital inputs assigned to specific analog inputs.

Now, if you want to use the DVD's internal 5.1 decoder, you'll need to run 6 analog RCA cables between the 5.1 output on the DVD and the 5.1 input on the receiver (upper left side, called "External Decoder Input"). This input is toggled on and off with any video input.

If you prefer to use the Yamaha's internal decoders, which may be better than the DVD's, then you just run a coaxial digital cable from the DVD's output to one of receiver's two digital inputs: DVD or TV. If those are already in use, then you might get away using the Tape or CD input and using the BGV mode.

According to the manual, the signal priority is this:

RF Digital
Optical Digital
Analog

So, it would be possible to piggyback the DVD's audio on top of the TV's audio - as long as the DVD was playing the receiver would cut out the TV's analog input and instead use the DVD's digital input. But you can't piggyback video. So, something else to think upon, you might want to run the DVD's video output directly to the TV, instead of through the receiver.

Choices, choices!

Yamaha does have assignable digital inputs. You have to go into the menu and set them up under "I/O Settings". It's a lot easier to do it in the on-screen setup than to try to decipher it on the display though.

Are you positive about that? I've been going through the online manual and can't find any mention of how to assign inputs, nor does it seem to have an on-screen setup menu (only on-screen status). The front-panel display setup menu also does not seem to have anything for assigning digital inputs either.

I agree, I haven't found anything in the manual that would allow my to assign. So, it looks like i'm going to have to use the BGV feature.

I'm not positive about his particular model, but I have worked with the RX-V line a lot. The 630, 640, 740, 1200, and 1300 all had assignable inputs so I would think the 2095 would as well, but I could be wrong. I know the way it looks in the menu is it would say "I/O Assignment" then it would show the input number corosponding to the number next to the input on the back. In otherwords it would say "#8 MD/TAPE" and by hitting the arrow keys on the remote you could change it to "#8 DVD" or whatever input you want (except for AUX Video on my model at least). How old is that model?

The 2095 is much older - looks like fall 1998 release. The digital inputs are assigned specific analog input names on the rear panel, rather than numbers.

My mistake... Maybe it doesn't allow it then. That really bites!
