by running a digital opt in connection (fiber optic wire)from my sony home theater system to the sony playstation 2 opt out creates a clearer picture and better sound with certain dvd's as opposed to playing the same dvd on my regular sony dvd player attached with a coax digital connection (non-fiber optic wire). would this be true of all my dvd's regardless or simply less quality dvd's made with say mpeg1? i would hate to have that be the case as it would be a little cubersome to watch every movie on sony playstation considering i love my normal sony dvd player. just curious if anyone can enlighten me. thanks.

First of all, unless I've been asleep for a few months (it could happen), the optical "wire" (actually a fiber optic strand, glass or plastic) only carries sound, as pulses of light. The picture is carried in a video (or S-video) cable, which really is wire.

Why you see a difference in picture quality is a puzzle.

Is your PS2 newer than your DVD player? This might explain it. My buddy had a first generation Sony DVD player that was nothing but crap, then he got a PS2, and it's like night and day.

it is actually a very new Sony dvd player HT-1700D, i got it before it was even out in the marketplace about 2 mos ago..i still have yet to try a legitimate dvd and not one that was simply transferred from mpeg, so i can let you know, but even transferred ones i would rather play on dvd player..but yes, the ps2 is newer as i ust bought this past weekend, so i am not sure if that would make a difference..

The coax connection may be introducing ground problems ... just a thought.
