I recently stumbled upon MMDesign.com while trying to come up with a trully efficient way to store my DVDs. I looked no further (well, actually I did but had to back-track :-). They were very quick in shipping, and when I left a message that I was short one silly plastic tray, expecting maybe a call back, I received an apology via e-mail that night plus a shipping notice for the tray the next day.

I've taken July 4th week-end to re-package my whole collection. It does take a bit of time but the results are spectacular - a trully browsable collection in less than one-quarter the space that is actually better than a 300 DVD changer. Really!

Happy 4th!

No way!

The advantages of a DVD Jukebox include not having to constantly handle the disc. Every time you take a disc out you are touching it, and creating more opportunity to damage/do something bad to the disc.

Moreover, I don't have to get off my couch just to change a disc!

DVD Jukeboxes rock!

AH, that's true once you've decided what you want to view. But to make that decision, and just browse around, that's what I'm talking about. It's nice to quickly be able to check out the covers in front of you, especially with guests. Plus, you get to use a better DVD player too, sooo, WAY!

I agree that you are handling the discs some more, but unless you are watching the same DVD every week, this is a moot point with a modicum of common care applied.

Sorry, I didn't mean to rule out changers at all, which upon re-reading looks like I did. I did want to point out that here's an excellent and overlooked alternative. Obviously there's something to be said for both approaches. Also take into consideration that the changer approach begets scaling problems once you start getting in the 600+ range.

Hey, you DO need to get off the couch once in a while - gotta get some blood circulation going :-).

Cheers,

DJ

Very true, that is why you need to get

www.dvdprofiler.com

This software is amazing and you can print all of your covers in a book, much much more. When you enter the bar code, part of the name, whatever it gets ALL the info including EVERY actor in the movie, rating data, etc.... Blows away the cover.

To make entering your collection into DVD Profiler easy, stop by your local Radio Shack and ask for a free CueCat barcode scanner.

See this thread for notes on the CueCat and configuring it to work with DVD Profiler.

Don't suppose somebody stateside would obtain and send me one of these CueCat fellows? (obviously I could cover costs)

Suppose it might be cheaper to buy a barcode scanner in the UK?

Me, too! I'd be happy to cover the costs if someone would be willing to pick up a CueCat and mail it to me.

Actually I ended up with Readerware - DVD Profiler looked too much of a symbiotic experience :-). And I picked up a WASP scanner for about $150 from Provantage.com.

Readerware is not perfect but works well for bulk cataloguing. Another thing you can do in Readerware (you may in DVD Profiler, I'm not sure) is to drag a DVD description URL from selected websites like Amazon and Barnes & Nobles into a target to suck up the DVD info and thumbnail.

Cheers,

I'm thinking of installing a tractor-trailor in my basement since I've been into DVD since '97. A few shelfs and I'm good to go.
